MemberLove it man!
There’s nothing like putting effort into something and finally having it pay off, is there?
Really – well done man – well done.
I too have been smitten by those birds – and today I’m hoping to spy a couple of raptors while wandering Brazos Bend state park. I’d be south chasing the cursed whooping cranes for the Nature Conservancy again, but the weather is decidedly ugly, so I’ve postponed that until Friday when there’s a fair weather window opening again.
Oh – and Jay – I rented a 500mm Canon F4 IS from LensRentals.com for this trip – I’ve been very pleased so far with their service. Just an FYI for you guys who are like me, and not yet able to plop down $6k for a lens.

Membergreat photo Jay! Now that you have gotten your shot, when you get done soaking it up, I would love to hear what is next on the list, maybe a cinnamon teal? (doesn’t really compare in rarity to what you have but a cool rarer seen one nonetheless)

MemberHey Jay – you’ll appreciate this – cruising I see a male harrier making its way up the ditch towards me, and I try to pull that big mamajama 500mm up and out the window.
I have lovely *very* blurry shots of a passing harrier now.

Colin M.Membergreaaat photo man…i have a female thats been cruising around across from my house, i have a few poor shots of her eating something off the ground, but yet to get quite close enough for my 300 mm to give me that spectacular shot..

Colin M.Memberwhen i say female i am referring to a female harrier hawk, not a human female lol…

Before you clarified this, I thought I’d accidently gone to the Itinerant Voyeur.
Here’s a gratuitous female I saw this weekend:

LOL! You don’t need a 300mm for that man, you just need a Ferarri!
Thanks for the comments.
ps.

John BennettMemberColin Harriers are habitual and the females are or can be quite curious. Female Harriers are relatively easy, the males..aka Grey Ghost are nother matter entirely. If you have one or some that cruise a field, pay attention to its route for a couple days whenever you see it, you will find there are patterns to their path that they repeat as they mouse.
If you see one and then approach the field..Good luck.

Bring a chair, go into the field close to an section you can predict when they arent there, sit and read a book. They *will* come to you. 300mm is more than enough for female Harriers. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had one veer off its path to come check me out when they hear the shutter tripping. Ive had numerous occassions where they have not only turned towards me, but flown right over my head, no more than 10-15 feet away.
