Joel ThompsonMemberI am trying to get organized for the up coming season and am looking for a new system for my boat bag. Currently I just throw in my fly boxes out of my wade fishing system. I would like to change that as it just always seems to be a little too disorganized for my liking. I am thinking clear compartmentalized boxes for the boat bag and was wondering if any of you had any suggestion on size of boxes, brand, or if you would recommend someting else. The bag I have is the largest one Simms makes.

MemberJoel,
I pretty much use cheap plano configurable compartment boxes in my boat.

Lando I love all of the Cliff boxes. They are inexpensive and built to last, but I am really looking for the compartmentalized style box for the boat bag. It is just easier to clean up all the flies laying around at the end of the day.

I suppose “cheap ass” was directed towards me.

Joel ThompsonMemberJoel,
Also, buy a few of those huge 12″x12″ ripple foam patches. The front seat of my wood boat flips up and is the worlds largest fly box- I stuck a few of those patches to make 3 feet of ripple foam under the lid. Its a great system for me.Dave,
I like the magnetic stickers you can get from cliff outdoors. They work really well and all you do is set the fly down on it and it sticks very well. That is my drying spot before they go back in the box. The ripple foam to me is a pain and flies have a tendency (in my experience) to always want to pop out. You should give the magnets a try. I think you will be impressed!Joel

MemberJoel-
In my boat bag, I like to use the Meiho Deep 36 compartment boxes for trout flies.Feb 19, 2010 at 12:26 am #41696anonymous
MemberJoel,
I do have one of the magnet strips in one of my older boats.

Joel…aren’t you worried about a stiff breeze or spillage relieving you of your hard-earned flies? I used to use a Wheatley-style box but kept losing too many flies to my clumsy fingers. I’m using ripple foam style boxes now….and foam lined with the little slits. They are Clif’s and the C&F boxes.

MemberJoel, here a few shots of my current boat bag system for fly boxes. I was introduced to this schema by Gary Merriman at the Fish Hawk here in Atlanta and it is the best method I’ve found so far. The fly boxes are Dewitt clear acrylic 6 Long Compartment

MemberCalm down, sparky. I am pretty sure Joel can get away with under 20 patterns and doesn’t need to carry everything and the kitchen sink. One beast for terrestrials, one for streamers, and use smaller boxes (like the C&F………..which can hold quite a few) for mayflies, one for caddis, one for worms/eggs, etc. Get a piece of foam and stick it next to your seat, but just make sure to put them away at the end of the day.

MemberI like the plano 3618 (i had to look through their website to find the exact model) because it has 18 fixed compartments that will not come loose and mix up your flies.
They are the same size as the cliff bugger beast jr profile wise and my patagonia bag will hold at least 8
