MemberA good way to get the bunks not to grab when off loading is to spray em down with silicone. We use that tech to get the maverick hpxv off of the trailer when you have just a little water. A friend of mine that guides in Florida told me about the spray. He also told me about another guide that was launching this boat on a step ramp without the winch strap hooked and his boat hit the deck

MemberAren’t most outboards made mostly from plastic, cast, and Aluminum?
At 20′ with zero visibility you better be well trained and using scuba if you attempt to find and haul it up. Someone with a high def graph could most likely locate it and get the GPS on it.
Mike is right! In another life I used to dive alot and held a search cert. It’s very dark 20′ down in a river hole. 😕 Hire a recovery company to bring it up or just punt. A motor is a hell of a lot cheaper than a life.

MemberI’ve got two SLT 5wts and it’ll be a loooong time before I trade them up for anything else. I’m totally satisfied with that 5wt.
That’s good news Morsie. I’ll have one of the new 7’11 12 wt’s when they become available. It’ll be perfect for these guys. This one was caught on a CPX 9wt and it was all that rod wanted.

Show off, ;D

MemberWind SUX! I am in destin this week as well. This year is a little late as far as the water temp goes. If you are looking for reds on the fly you are in a tuff place my friend. Call up the old florida outfitters and ask for Capt. Jason Stacy. It will cost you a few coin but, he will show you some reds on the fly. This winter has been tuff on florida! The fish are here but, they are well educated. I have fished them in the heat of summer as well as the cold of winter and I can tell you they live here. Reds are just plain tuff in the panhandle but, it’s the hunt that makes them fun. If you want dumb easy fish (I Do) book a trip to LA. Bones in the Bahamas are way easier to catch on the fly than reds in panhandle. When the water temps creeps into the 70’s the beach will be going off. Ladyfish, Pomps, Jacks… ect. Have faith my friend it will get better. I went through the same stuff before I got hooked up with a good guide. 😎

MemberSome of the very first B.A.S.S T’s were of the fly rod type. I know a couple of guys that won a few and they are still still around.

I have fished with these guys in NW Florida and they all have been great.

MemberTravis, I have my boat under 24 hour lockdown. Strange trucks have been seen in the area with TN plates and striper scales all over them. 😕

MemberAbe, I own the LMB rod from SAGE and a few of the others that you have own your list. You are right about the Xi2 being fast. Try up lining two weights and I think it will get better for the big bugs. I have a 9 weight Clouser line on my Xi2 and it works well.
The LMB is nice for BASS stuff but, it has no soul. The Bass rod will cast a small house cat into a head wind and uproot stumps. I have a older St.Croix Ultra Legend #8 that is a great bass rod and it works very well with a Clouser line (as does most rods).
Mike Anderson hit it on the head with the Rio Outbound line. I think that is what make the SAGE BASS rod work so well. I have been fooling around with the Rio Outbound (short) on a few rods and it is the best line I have ever found for casting BIG STUFF.
I have kinda lost it as of late and got on a Helios kick and bought 5,6,8 and 10 weights. Best rods I have ever cast period. In the smaller weights the Helios maybe is not that much different that a Z-axis but, when you start blind casting big streamers on a 350-500gr head for a long period of time it sure pays off. They have a nice med fast action with lots of soul.
If I were in your shoes I would try a Rio Outbound (short) in a 9 weight and get some really stiff mono or even a big game leader ad some 15 or 20 pound tippet.

MemberI would like to have one of every line and weight that Rio and SA make just to try on all the rods I own. I think I should take the money that I was going to spend on a new high end rod and just buy a bunch of lines. I have found that swapping lines has made some rods that were not up to par come alive. I have a #6 RIO (short) outbound taper that has really preformed great on few #6 saltwater sticks. Makes me wonder what other combos I could put together…………….

MemberI really look forward to the podcast. One thing that kinda hit me last night was that all most, if not all of the guest that you have interviewed seem really passionate about fly fishing. It’s easy to listen to passionate people talk about what they are passionate about. I like to listen to the podcast when I am on a road trip to the river. Thanks for the solid work..

MemberGreat thread! I am in the market for a new boat. I have a 17′ Walleye boat with a 75hp tiller on it for the big water. I am looking for something that will get skinny, run a river and hold old dad and the two boys. Yet be able to chase stripers and pole for Alabama bone fish out on the flats of the local lakes.

MemberNot a video but, the podcast with Kelly Galloup is also outstanding.

MemberI have one of those ross fly start 4 reels. It’s a China made import but, it works well enough. I would look into a ross (american made reel) if I had to do it over again.

MemberIt would have to be Lefty. Man just think of all of the stories he would tell. I would like to set around the fire while having a few pulls off of the jug and listen to some of the stories about fly fishing for bass out of a canoe and guiding Joe Brooks.

MemberI have the #8 Xi2 and I overline it. I do think that you should look for a slower rod if you don’t like it with a #7 line. I am starting not to like fast rods. It’s all choice in what you like in a rod. I have the older RPXLI #8 and I think it’s good with a #8 line.

MemberI have the LMB and it works very well for tossing big stuff. I think combo works because of the line. I am going to try the line on #8 Xi2 and see how that works out. Mike Anderson told me that he has used the sage preformance “Bass” taper on a #7 Xi2 and it works like a champ. I like the rod/line combo enough to put the SMB and the Bluegill on my wish list. I can make good on the money cast (70′ plus) with some pretty big hair bugs and the more usable 30′-50′ cast are easy. Maybe it’s the line or maybe it’s the combo but, for $350.00 you get a good rod, line and case. Hey, because it’s a “BASS” rod we can now fish fly rod spinner baits with out feeling guilty…..right? 😮
