The Itinerant AnglerSage has announced the successor to the Z-Axis, the new “ONE.”
The acronyms and marketing-speak have really started to pile up, but as far as I can tell, they’ve continued to increase the strength of their resins, allowing them to go lighter and thinner with the blank. That’s a continuation of what we’ve been seeing for the last ten years, and I have no doubt it’s a great-casting rod.
I really like the throwback grip and I’m a fan of black, but the reel seat is leaving me a little cold for some reason. I think I just like silver and black.
Here’s the press release; it is, um, interesting reading.

I agree, just something odd looking about the color. The seat on the 8wt looks much better. Anybody want to give me $700 and I will see how it casts?

MemberThey’re trying to make the grip look more like a G. Loomis.

The Itinerant AnglerBrian –
That grip goes way back man, long before Loomis was founded.

MemberI like the grip…but a walnut real seat is kind of pedestrian for a $700 fly rod. I’m sure it casts like a champ….but the cosmetics could be better. Think I’ll wait for blanks to become available. Cheers.

MemberThe ONE rods just won best new fly rod of the year at the big European fishing tackle show.
There’s another new offering that I find mighty interesting, a series of European style nymph rods – 10 footers -#2 – #5 weights made with the same technology as the ONE.
The bass rods a have also received an overhaul, new lighter blanks and better fittings (bright red reel seats) and there’s a new model – the Peacock which is effectively a 7’11” 12 weight. Its a monster and for me it was love at first cast. I spent a couple of weeks abusing one of them on hordes of trevally and big mackerel. Can’t wait to fish it on our Murray cod and up in the Amazon next year.

MemberI’ve got two SLT 5wts and it’ll be a loooong time before I trade them up for anything else. I’m totally satisfied with that 5wt.
That’s good news Morsie. I’ll have one of the new 7’11 12 wt’s when they become available. It’ll be perfect for these guys. This one was caught on a CPX 9wt and it was all that rod wanted.

MemberMichael that was the very first rod I ordered for myself!!!
It’ll be a sad day for mankind when all R&D stops. That’s the day when we begin to go backwards. Even the bamboo rod makers are striving for new and better techniques and designs. I thought my 5D was the bee’s knees and the duck’s guts, until the 7D came along. My old Nokia is such a piece of shit next to an iphone………. and so on it goes.
The SLT 5 is a complete and utter anomaly.

I just purchased some Z-Axis rods in the last 12 months, so I will not be upgrading any time soon. Fortunately I was able to get some decent pricing or I would be pretty bitter right now.

Well, that one was a nice one. Biggest of the year so far. Maxed out the 30 pound bogas.
You up for a trip to LA this fall? Should be off the charts.

MemberWhile somewhat of an infomercial, I thought the following youtube clip provided interesting facts on the Sage One in particular, Sage rods in general and also information on modulus, scrim, etc. used in graphite rod making.
