Im getting this rod for snook-bonefish-baby tarpon- permit.. yeah a fight like Oscar de LaRoya against Evander Hollifield

Why would you overline that rod?

I don’t like overlining rods. To me the Xi2 isn’t that stiff. I guess the only time I’d consider overlining is if I was sight fishing and had to make short, quick casts.

BTW, many manufacturers make their lines slightly heavier than the traditional guidelines. (They do this for today’s fast rods.) If you call the companies they will tell you the weight of their lines.

I have 4 Sage Xi2 rods and don’t overline any of them. I am using Rio lines on most of them except for the Sage Equater Taper II on my 8wt. They all work great.

Xi2 rods have probably the lowest swing weight of any rod I’ve ever cast.

I’ve got mine loaded with the Scientific Angler’s Tarpon taper line.

I think if you look at the heads on most of the lines being discussed here, and I know for a clouser taper, its already a half line weight up than the AFTMA standard.

You don’t need to use an eight wt. line.

I have the #8 Xi2 and I overline it. I do think that you should look for a slower rod if you don’t like it with a #7 line. I am starting not to like fast rods. It’s all choice in what you like in a rod. I have the older RPXLI #8 and I think it’s good with a #8 line.

I use the 6,7, and 9. I line mine with the line that matches what I want to do with it. If I were on a big flat in high wind, I’d overline it maybe

Just to add another choice to the discussion, I have four Xi2s and love them.  I would not overline them.  They work fine with many of the lines already discussed, once you’ve learned to cast them.  (My tendency, at first, was to apply too much power on the forward cast, which they don’t need.)

The lines that work best for me are the Wulff Saltwater Bermuda Triangle Taper lines.  I have Wulff BTT floating, intermediate tip and intermediate lines and they all work well with the Xi2s, especially in situations like sight fishing for redfish where you need quick, accurate casts with minimal false casting.  I’m not a long distance caster, so I don’t know how those lines would work at a distance, but they work fine for me out to 80 feet.
