Brett, Do you have the Xi2 #6? I have a #6 Rplxi and it’s my favorite rod. I was wondering if the Xi2 #6 is as good as the #8?
Hey guys, sorry about the bad estimate on the fish. I don’t know much about trout and Jake was happy with #8 so #8 it is. 😎 That fishing trip and one more make twice I have been trout fishing. God willing it won’t be the last. I don’t keep fish much so I don’t know what trout weigh. I can tell you that a 20″ Smallmouth Bass weights around #5+ on the Tenn river so you guys are right about the trout thing. Jake is the one who counts and I will tell him it’s just a good’un. We spent sunday after noon casting at the pond and I think a new fly rod is in the works. Mike, Jake is trying to figure out how to get the money out of his piggy bank so he and Jackson can book a trip with you :o. They are scheming as we speak. Sorry once again. I just dropped a small bundle at feather craft on a new #8 weight Xi2 and a Sage 3400d reel. Ouch! I am trying to do my part 😉 Toss in a spare spool and a couple of new lines, fly boxes and one of those big green ugly boat bags and you have the makings for a trip to the bankruptcy lawyer. Dub out……
I got into the Pomp’s around the last of April one year from the beach. Big fun on a #7 rod. Also booked Capt. Alan Steele from Blue Bay Outfitters and went night fishing in the bay under the dock lights. Caught a lot Trout and a few Redfish. I have fished Destin a few times and from what I have found out and been told I would drive down to Port St. Joe. Bad fishing is better than no fishing!
Back to rods and there rated line weights. The whole reason I started that other thread was the perceived “NEED” for a #9 rod. I have  6,7,8 and 10 weight RLPXi’s. Truth be told the #6 fishes great with the #6 GPX SA line which is really a 6 1/2 weight line and the #7 fishes way better with any #8 floater than it does with a #7. The #8 rod is kind of a puzzle, it cast good with a #9 bass bug taper. Not great but, good. The#8 RIO Clouser line cast very well on the #8 RPLXi. I think the #7 cast just as well and is lighter. The #10 is a whole nuther animal because I cast a small 3/8″ rope on it using live Hamsters and small Chickens! ;D Hell, Maybe I need some casting lessons and just to buy a whole bunch of lines and try them out.
DANG! Now I am really CORNFUSED! 😮 I was dreaming everybody would suggest the same rod, reel and line. I know……I know…… cast them and see. I plain to go try a few out and see just which rod I like the best. Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions guys. I what I need is a fishing trip or two to cure a bad case of the “Shack Nasties”. The old RPLXi won’t look so bad with a big fish tied to the end of it. LOL!
I was talking to Ed Story at Feathercraft today and he gave the thumbs up to the Sage Z axis and the new Winston salt rod. He also talked very highly of the new Sage Bass rods. Said they can’t keep them in stock. From what I hear they must work very well for casting the big stuff. I just don’t know if I can get over the 7′ 11″ length.
I know what you mean about the old WAR HORSE stuff. I have a couple of older RPLXi’s that I really like but, with all of the new lightweight materials that are out I feel like I need a new one. ;D I guess I should just go cast a few and see. I reall want to like the ORVIS Helios. Can a fly rod live up to that advertising? Can I pull the trigger on a $800.00 stick? What about a Winston or Scott? What about the Sage XI2?…………… 😮
Before the wife and I were blessed with two baby boys I used to fish all over the Tenn river. Pickwick and Wilson were my playgrounds on many a trip. I have caught some very nice smalies (one over 7 pounds) on a crankbait tackle but, nothing over 5 pounds on the fly. I still have all of gear and the boat that has been tucked away in the garage for a few years now. I have been thinking real hard on a spring trip to Pickwick to visit a few old stump beds and shell mounds just off of the main river channel. A clouser minnow won’t stand a chance when the water get around 55-60 degs. I have bunch of good photos of my past life as a smallie junkie but, they are all in 8×10 print film. Suddenly I find myself out in the shop tying clousers as long as a spinner bait. What gives? Heck I even bought a new Canon Rebel XTI and a few nice pieces of glass for it. Maybe this is year for a few trips?  You would be more than welcome if you want to make the trip to North Alabama. April is good for BIG wipers below the dams and for withe bass as well.  😉
David, I have been using a furled leader for the past couple of trips and I can say it’s very good at turning over small chickens. 😉 The Lefty Kreh leader formula works great but, they furled leader looks like it’s works just as well if not better. Dub out….
Make the hunt “Fair Chase” use a good pair of “Flips” Ugh….thats a sling shot for folks that are not from the south. All kidding a side maybe a air rifle?
I have not fished the “Gold” but, as Wildcat stated the Clouser is the stuff for a faster action rod. I just bought a #8 for my #8 RPLXi SAGE and it loads the rod much better that the standard BASS taper line. I am thinking real hard about a #6 Clouser for the #6 RLPXi. I really like the clouser lines.
I fish Rplxi’s for the most part and I have several weights(6-10) all loaded with Ross cayon reels of some size. I fish for SM/LM Bass and Stipers so I find the need to fish saltwter rods on the bigger Tenn river impoundments and creeks. Big wind sucks!
I tie my own for Bass / Striper fishing. I use Mason or Maxima (Hard Nylon) I use the Lefty Krey/ Bob Clouser chart found in Lefty’s book. It starts with #50 pound test so you might not want to use it for any fish that is leader shy. Dave Whitlock has a formula in the LL Bean fly fish book that is good for trout. I think Umpqua (sp?) sells a kit with Dave’s name on it. One thing I have noticed is that with the big #50 you can turn over a hamster or small cat into a big wind. I would think the Frog Hair kit would be fine as I have been told that the product is good stuff 8-)Dub…….
