I well I broke down and ordered a new 890-4 Xi2  and a new Sage 3400D reel from Feathercraft. I must say it’s like buying 15 or 20 feet of casting distance. WOW! 😮 I LOVE THIS ROD! Reel is very nice as well. It’s really is a step up from the older Rplxi rod that was in production before the new Xi2. Sage has hit the ball out of the park with this rod. It cast off of the tip for the close in shots and it’s got the power to send a clouser out of sight when you need to go long. It does it all very well. I had to break it in with Mike Anderson this weekend on the “Sad Ditch”. We did bend the rod a few times. My eight year old son (who has not mastered casting yet) was fishing out a cast I made for him when BAM!!!!!!! a 20 1/2″ 8 pound BROWN TROUT took a swipe at the fly. After a few very frantic minutes Mike got the net under the fish. We took some pics and measured the fish and then my son let her go back into the river. We made a few more drifts down one of Mike’s spots when BAM!!!!!! I got a strike and a good hookup on a 18″ brown about 4 1/2 pounds. We made a few more pics a sent her on the way as well (I am sure Mike will show up with the pics). In all we caught alot of fish and had one heck of a time. A month or so ago Mike and I spent a day with my 10 year old son on the water and he caught a bunch of trout as well as cleaning out one major school of Skip Jack! ;D Mike is a first class act. If you guys have a chance to fish with Mike I can tell you it’s worth your time. If you are looking for a #8 fly rod I would tell you to cast a Xi2 for yourself and see if it fits you like it does me.

    Hey Todd,
    I couldn’t agree more.
I got hold of a Xi2 990 and matched it with a SA LA 890 Reel for mey recent Bonefishing trip and I love it to bits. It is a rod that you don’t have to think too much about casting , you just Cast !!!

My brother who was fishing a Loomis GL4 8 wt reckoned that in the hand the Xi2 9 felt more like a 7 wt such is its balance and lightness. Fishing hard all day was never an issue.

The Xi2 is a great rod, but I’m more inclined to fish my 6wt. Z-axis over my 8wt. Xi2 anytime bonefishing in the Bahamas. SAGE did hit the ball out of the park with the Xi2, but they hit a grand slam with the Z-axis. Still none the less the Xi2 is a great rod, heck thats why I have three, 8,10,12.

    20 1/2″ 8 lb. and a 18″ 4

I’m with Lando on this, those fish must have quite the food source.
Every 20 1/2″ trout I have ever seen has been around 3 lbs. maybe pushing 4 lbs.

Hope Mike shows up with the pictures, so we can all see these footballs. 😉

Hey if Jake says he was 8 pounds I’m not going to argue with him ;). I didn’t weight the fish but I’ve heard they get bigger by a half pound every 8 hours after you catch it.  ;D BTW, these aren’t fed fish.

Todd… Those are some nice fat healthy looking browns. Good job, and congradulations to your son. But I think your overboard on the weight.

I always figured this fish at about 5-6 lbs. maybe it is more like 12.

    pssssssssssstttttttttttttt…………his son is 10.

Read it again Lando, the boy in that photo was eight.

At 21” and 14 to 15 girth, weight calculators would put the fish around 5 to 6 pounds. I’ve caught enough of them and weighed them on bocas to know.

    His other son is 10.

I love watching kids rip it up with a fly rod.

Kid likes Puck and fishing….Get that kid up to the land of 10,000 lakes and hockeytown USA (sorry to any Redwings fans out there).

Great looking fish, I’ve never weighed a trout?

In my earlier post about my fish’s weight is was trying to be a little sarcastic. (Very hard to do over the computer) Overplaying my tendency to say fish are smaller than they are. My real estimate of my fish has always been right around 7-7 ½ lbs. Making the fish discussed in the original post smaller than that, but still a nice fish.

Once again good job. Looks like you have “hooked” your son.

Hey guys, sorry about the bad estimate on the fish. I don’t know much about trout and Jake was happy with #8 so #8 it is. 😎 That fishing trip and one more make twice I have been trout fishing. God willing it won’t be the last. I don’t keep fish much so I don’t know what trout weigh. I can tell you that a 20″ Smallmouth Bass weights around #5+ on the Tenn river so you guys are right about the trout thing. Jake is the one who counts and I will tell him it’s just a good’un. We spent sunday after noon casting at the pond and I think a new fly rod is in the works. Mike, Jake is trying to figure out how to get the money out of his piggy bank so he and Jackson can book a trip with you :o. They are scheming as we speak. Sorry once again. Todd Taylor rookie trout guy……

All my fly rod caught Redfish are hefty specimens…Xi2 8wt rocks on them as well.

Brett, Do you have the Xi2 #6? I have a #6 Rplxi and it’s my favorite rod. I was wondering if the Xi2 #6 is as good as the #8?
