T. WilesMemberHad a Friday off and I called my buddy John to go fish somewhere. I just got back my new 7wt TFO Axiom after breaking it 2 weeks ago on it’s first trip. I was eager to break it in—not literally this time. (Eddie Wyatt’s shop was unbelievably fast on getting it back to me). John had a brand new 7wt TFO TiCr-X, and we decided to throw only Streamers, and see what might bite.
We fished multiple stretches of the mid and lower Holston , with some creative maneuvers to access different stretches of the river. Having a driftboat with a trolling motor sure came in handy.John with some nice fish

Beautiful scenery

My first Striper on a Fly!!!!!!!!! It was pure dumb luck—we went scouting for stripers and hybrids in some good current with no luck, then on our drift back to the launch site, a blind cast into dead water—BAM!–my fly got slammed.

Fattie

Dooooohhhh!!!!!! While stripping my full sink SA Striper fly line in some white water shoals, my stripped line slipped off the side of the boat and wrapped around a sharp rock. The boat was moving through the rapids, and the line nearly broke the rod again….I wrapped my hand around just in time to snap the first time used $64 line…….. >:(
Oh well, I liked John’s SA Streamer Express better—guess I’ll have to make another trip back to Eddie’s Shop for some 250 grain.

The Itinerant AnglerIf it is sinking line, just use 50# Gudebrod braided monofilament to make a sleeve for it, and nailknot both ends of the sleeve down.

MemberZack, I think that’s a Hickory Shad.

T. WilesMemberI agree with Todd,
I’ve been calling them Hickory Shad—but the Wikipedia image for a hickory shad is much different. Some guys I know have been calling them quillbacks, but the quillbacks that I have caught look more like carp than these large shad. These fish are very abundant in a few stretches where we fish. When the boat nears the 100-500 fish school of 1 to 3 lb-ers, several of them will splash and make a large wake just under the surface—kinda like the Asian jumping carp. They have tiny mouths, so when they nip at fly, they often miss, and get snagged in the backfin. When hooked, they fight like demons.During our float(s) we also spotted a few monster carp–including two 10lb+MONSTER Coy–a giant white one and a gold one. Fun to chase, but no hookups though.
Here are a few shots from our return visit the following week.

John made this bass look much bigger in his “Bill Dance Pose” holding it toward the camera 😉

Zach, I appreciate the braided mono offer.
