Memberin some dream world I’d love to upgrade from a 15 to a 25 on my Gheenoe. That $3,000.00 price tag is a tough one to wrap my brain around.
bdBrian (or anyone), can you comment on your preference for going from a 15 to a 25 hp? I am toying with the idea of buying a 9.9 for a RiverHawk, believing that might be enough and and thinking I might like the lower weight. On the other hand, the boat is rated for up to a 20 (and everyone knows there is a little room for some extra).
With something like a 25, maybe I could pull my kids in an tube, which would make me a hero with our two shorties.

I would go with a good used Merc 25 2 stroke.

J.T. GriffinMemberZach, when you were working with the glass, resin, and paint, did you where a respirator or any other special safety equipment?

The Itinerant AnglerI used a pretty high end facemask that I got at like Home Depot, and definitely long sleeves and gloves and safety glasses.

MemberEnded up buying a used 2-stroke 20 hp Mercury for a good price, assuming it works, and probably a fair price for engine only even if it doesn’t work.
Bought it from an older guy who seemed very trustworthy and said he would give me my money back if it didn’t run to my satisfaction. Plus, I have a friend who can fix engines with his eyes closed, so I figure I didn’t have too much to lose.
It came attached to a beater duck hunting/fishing boat and was sitting on an impressive homemade trailer. Had a new gas tank, seat and trolling motor, too.
So now, I am stuck trying to figure out if I want to get a new engine for the RiverHawk and keep this one as my duck hunting beater boat.

MemberA good way to get the bunks not to grab when off loading is to spray em down with silicone. We use that tech to get the maverick hpxv off of the trailer when you have just a little water. A friend of mine that guides in Florida told me about the spray. He also told me about another guide that was launching this boat on a step ramp without the winch strap hooked and his boat hit the deck

Billy HarrisMemberZach, is your gheenoe the 15’4″. I have a Classic that is 15’6″. I am thinking of putting a 5hp to putt around in sloughs and ditches. How did that 8hp push your boat around?

The Itinerant AnglerBilly –
Mine is the Highsider, which I think is 15’9″. I spent the afternoon running around Lake Blue Ridge in it today. The 8 hp will push it about 15mph with a cooler, a dog, and my girlfriend Tracy.

Had a great time incidentally. Used Gretchen as a float tube motor. 1/2hp will move you surprisingly well. 🙂

Billy HarrisMemberThat is awesome. My winter project is to redo my gheenoe. I really like yours. I have been a little hesitant to make mine looks nice cause it will attract attention and attention I mean the eyes of thieves. I am thinking of buying a propane powered motor. Lehr has a 5hp and a 9.9hp. I have a 15 now so I am leaning toward the 5 due to it only weighing 45pounds.

MemberI am trying to decide between a camo wrap for my RiverHawk or a new paint job.
If I go with paint, there is one of those $200 car paint places a few miles from my house. Would a cheap automobile paint job be a good choice for bringing my RiverHawk back to life?
Thanks for anyone with thoughts on that question.

The Itinerant AnglerAaron –
Flip your boat, sand it gently with 400 grit sandpaper. Apply a primer coat. Sand again to smooth the primer. Paint using the “roll and tip” method with a boat paint OR use a spray gun if you have one. I would be surprised if a car place would really paint a boat for $200 — if they would though, that’s a fair price, especially if you can get a catalyzed paint. Wraps are going to cost a lot more.
If I ever need to redo the paint job on my Gheenoe I will probably look into getting it gel coated. Gel coats are essentially a colored epoxy and are stronger and more scratch resistant than any kind of paint.

J.T. GriffinMemberHey Zach, your build inspired me so I bought a Gheenoe earlier this summer. I’m going to put some fly rod tubes on it. I noticed on your build that you did one rod tube on each side. Do you wish you added more or would you keep it the same? It seems like adding four total (two on each side) is a little crowded on the noe but people do it. Any thoughts here?

The Itinerant AnglerHey JT, did you ever get this one built?
