MemberI noticed in the MidCurrent News that Rio is releasing a line for carp fishing.

MemberWhat will they think of next?
I will say that I have recently started using Rio Lines and prefer them over Cortland, Scientific and Orvis, with the exception of the SA Tarpon taper line.

MemberMaybe they are just a company who is very aware of the many directions the market is heading. I’m blown away at Rio’s vast assortment of lines. Many of these are Lines that most fly fishermen will never use. Lines that when you do use them it’s evident they were researched and developed by someone who actually knew what the line needed to do.
Does everybody need a Rio carp line, no. If someone was wanting to get into it would this line help that person, maybe. I applaud them for trying to make the best line for the many different applications. Just Look at the success of the Clouser lines. Knowing Rio I’d bet it’s going to be pretty nice.

MemberMark, I could not agree more!!! I guess you cant blame the companies they are in the business of making money but WOW!
I can just see it now: Sage releases a new 9′ 7wt (not the one they already have but a “Carp” model). Then you pair that with an Abel Super 7 in the “Carp” finish and round out the outfit with the new Rio “Carp” line as well as the new “Carp” leader. After all is said and done for the low, low price of $ 1695.99 you are… well, fishing for CARP!!!!
Sorry for the rambling but the waters have become so murky to the average FF to understand what advancements/ technology have been made that will truly impact your skill set and what is just pure marketing.
Thoughts???

MemberI’ve had the line since last September. The line is fantastic. I probably fish for carp more then anyone and I can say that the line is just not a marketing gimmick. The presentations that this line make are incredible. I have been able to make casts into several inches of water to carp and not spook them. Everyone thinks that carp are some big dumb bottom feeder, but they are just uneducated. I would put carp up in the realm of being as challengin as a permit. Now those that mean they are not easy to catch at some times, no. These fish are so tuned into their surroundings it is amazing. I have seen carp spook at the dead fall of a foot from 40 feet away from someone on the bank. They have incredible eye sight as well. Carp are a growing popular species to pursue on the fly and Rio and other companies realize that. So why not serve the needs of their customers and provide them with a product to help them satisfy their needs.

Right on . . . Right on . . . Right on . . .
Honest advice. Thanks Mike.

Mike McKeownMemberI would love to see the taper… and I am definitely going to cast and fish it… send a mail to the local distributor now. We have the exact conditions that will suit it, big still water, cristal clear to very spooky Yellowfish, that are now becoming very fly shy…
I only have one Rio, and its called a Sage line, Quiet Taper 2w, it performs well and the wear is as good as on my Sci Angler Quiet Taper 00w.
However I do find it a little too supple, if that is possible, and that it collapses if I fish it in warmer conditions.
Michael, what is on the end of yours???
Leader – ???
Tippet – ???
Fly or Team – ???I would rig it something like this;
Leader – 9 foot tapered to 5x, preferably Sci Angle or Frog Hair
Tippet – 5 thru 7 X
Fly or Team – Dry & Dropper, Hopper and CDC PTN or Stimulator and ZAK/Bead Head/EmergerApr 10, 2009 at 6:17 pm #35042krkaloz
MemberMike,
It sounds like you have the knowledge and skills to draw your conclusion. I am not all worked up nor am I downing Rio or Carp. I agree sound advice from one who has been there and done that is exactly what we all need.
What I made reference to is the fact that the industry that we all love has “marketed” so many choices the average FF (self included) is left with a lot of questions!

The Itinerant AnglerDean –
You may be missing some compound tapering in that comparison, and those charts only show the distance the taper occurs over, not the outside diameter of the line. It’s also likely there’s quite a bit of difference in the plastic chemistry. Have you compared this line to lines meant for other species with similar fishing profiles, like the redfish or pike or bonefish?

MemberWait, back on up a minute, *beep*beep*beep*…if I can catch carp with no problems, I should also catch permit without difficulty?
Apr 10, 2009 at 6:43 pm #35046deanf
MemberI can’t comment on the design of the tapers, I will say that the 30 foot weight of the two lines only differs by 8g. The Carp line does feature the XS Technology coating, whatever that is. RIO doesn’t explain it other than to say it makes the line “slicker”.

The Itinerant AnglerDean –
We dealt with some of that in this article:
http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/2008/11/article_cooking_up_some_lines.html
The next issue of American Angler has a large article by me on line tapering.
Apr 10, 2009 at 7:06 pm #35048deanf
MemberI look forward to reading it. I have to say though, if the compound taper on the Carp line vs the Mainstream is so radically different, one would think that RIO would be touting it as such.

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s a fair question Dean.

MemberMike Exl,
Thanks for the report. It sounds like they have produced another good line. The carp around here, at least the ones I see, are in gin clear water. Some of the ponds and lakes I fish also provide some good largmouth fishing in very clear skinny water. It sounds like it might serve well for that purpose as well.Apr 10, 2009 at 7:30 pm #35051todd taylor
MemberI would like to have one of every line and weight that Rio and SA make just to try on all the rods I own. I think I should take the money that I was going to spend on a new high end rod and just buy a bunch of lines. I have found that swapping lines has made some rods that were not up to par come alive. I have a #6 RIO (short) outbound taper that has really preformed great on few #6 saltwater sticks. Makes me wonder what other combos I could put together…………….

MemberHow “bout a line specifically for catfish?
