MemberI’d add that you should look at a longer rod and go up one weight too at least to 3 wt…..so totally agree with Zach on that…..if you ever think of trying Czech or even high stick techniques might want to even consider closer to 10 ft rods….some great rods out there in 10 ft. area that are great for this style of nymphing….I have used a Guideline 10 ft. 5 wt with success (before losing it on a bus LOL LOL)….and have seen great reviews on Guideline 10 ft. 3 wt…..but as I said there are other great makes out there too….know that Great Bay rods out of New Hampshire has a line of Czech nymph style rods in 11 ft. length in 3, 4, 5 wts…..design was assisted by Ian Colin James from here in Ontario….also used by Canadian Youth team

MemberEasy to download…..loved the fly pattern…..well filmed so even someone with two left hands (like me) could tie this fly…..looks really good and will be trying on local waters soon…..the format of teaching the pattern was good too….loved the easy going banter between the two of you (not just talking heads)…..the helpful tips don’t hurt either…..keep up the great work

MemberMy favorite series of books from the ages of about 9 to about 11–my creek-raiding days–were Jim Kjelgaard’s stories of boys with their dogs in the wilderness. “Big Red” is the most famous; I also recall titles like “Stormy” (about a black lab), “Outlaw Red” (naturally, about Big Red’s son), etc. I read as many of Kjelgaard’s stories as I could find at the local public library. Today I see from Kjelgaard’s Wikipedia entry that I must have missed a bunch of them.
Recently I picked up a copy of “Stormy” at a used book store, for a few cents. I was amazed at the complex level of the writing – this must have been pretty difficult stuff for me at 10 years old. In fact, the stories still hold up to a modern magazine level of writing and would be worth reading. Sadly, I just learned from Kjelgaard’s Wikipedia entry that he committed suicide at the age of 48. That bothers me; he made a big difference in my life, setting me to dreaming about places more wild than I could get to at that age, but have now visited. Zach
Zach, I remember reading these same stories….guess that might explain getting into Labs for quite a while (field trials, hunting) especially after Stormy…
I also loved Paddle To The Sea when I was younger….books by Farley Mowat…..read Roderick Haig Brown…..grew up reading my Dad’s books of Canadian writer/humourist/angler Greg Clark….and reading anything I could on fishing like one by Canadian outdors writer Tiny Bennet (not sure of title) on how to fish for game fish….read Field and Stream/Outdoor Life/Ontario Out Of Doors…guess all that led me astray didn’t it LOL LOL

MemberTim, if you make it back to Missoula I can’t say enough about the Old Post Pub. Great food, great beers, and the best damn hot wings you will ever let touch your lips! And if I am in town a little BBQ at my house can’t be beat! 😉
Joel
Not sure if mentioned elsewhere but in Missoula also had good breakfast at Montana Jack’s and Paul’s Pancake Parlor, great Tex-Mex at El Diablo (although hear great things about new place in town called Taco Sano) and Kadena’s Eatery in Rowdy’s Cabin serves amazing sandwiches too. Can’t remember the name of place (Fireplace????) but had great pizza there too. For great choice of beer there was Sean Kelly’s A Public House…..gee it almost sounds like I ate more than I fished LOL LOL.

MemberI admit to spending a little time online too….OK maybe more than a little time (but not 9 hours like Tradd D….only 8 hours and 55 minutes a day LOL LOL)….I spend time on IA most days….and check sites like MidCurrent, local Canadian/Ontario forums such as Hipwader and Fly Fish Ontario, as well as NAFF, FAOL…..even write a bit most days on my own blog…..in fact I have listed well over 300 (probably closer to 400) Internet links posted on my blog(no shameless self promotion LOL LOL; in fact you don’t even need to read the blog entries…but check out these resource links; lots of good stuff there)….guess this really means I need to spend more time on the water….but let me check out the local fly shops’ river reports first….

MemberZach, totally agree with those recommendations; loved KT’s Bar-B-Que and Nima’s Pizza….and it is incredible how many places we fish usually have a great place to chow down afterwards (or during)….here in Ontario a few of my favorite areas have great eateries….in Meaford there is the Leeky Canoe…..on Hwy 10 near the Upper Credit there is Flapjack’s….or Blondie’s near lower Grand below Elora…by the way I apologize for hijacking this thread

MemberGood fishing up that way too….lots of fine brookie lakes in Haliburton/Algonquin area
mike ormsby
MemberLots of great choices in northern Ontario…some accessible by road…some by train…some do require air travel….but all offer fly fishing for trout, mostly brookies (even big brookies), some even close to Aurora trout waters; check out these few:
http://www.kwagamalodge.com/ …awesome brookies….trophy brookies in Algoma Country…can fly in or go in by rail on scenic Agawa Canyon Express out of Sault Ste. Marie….and afterwardsstay for few more days in Sault Ste. Marie and you can fly fish St. Mary’s River in Soo for steelhead, Pacific salmon (especially pinks), browns, coaster brookies, even Atlantics
http://www.westcaribouair.com/ …..not a lodge per se but incredible brookie fishing
http://www.northernwoodslodge.com/ ….besides trout offers other species on the fly
http://www.perrylakelodge.com/ ….up near Matheson, Ontario…only 7 hours north of Toronto by car…brookies and even possibly Auroras…besides some big pike
http://www.cedarridgelodge.ca/main.html ….offers brookies and opportunities for Aurora trout too…plus other species tooplus great fly fishing on southern Ontario trout waters, most within a couple of hours of Toronto….lots of B&Bs, country inns available….plus great local fly shops
In this economy, most anglers are staying closer to home….and we’re really lucky in Ontario for all of the various fly fishing opportunities for trout
