Shane, the advice given so far is dead bang on — not much I can add — definitely think that getting casting instruction is great idea as is using a guide — and so is finding the right water for you — enjoy your time on the water — definitely take that trip to Montana; but go with the idea to enjoy yourself, not whether you catch browns or rainbows; hell, most times fly fishing isn’t even about the fish we’ve caught

With the shot itself I went for a perspective from underneath. Essentially showing the whites of its underside, vs the colours and patterning of it’s back.

Generally speakings thats against the grain.

Processing I played around with adjusting the light in a way that would be best be described as vignetting, but not quite. Sublely changing “light values” in different areas of the photo.

Now that I’ve had some time to digest it, and come back to it I see a couple minors flaws that need correctng :). Love digital

Thanks John for info on what you did — once again great shot — where in Ontario are you planning on going for muskie (no specifics needed but area???? — just curious as hope to get onto good size muskie myself this year — on my “to do” list LOL LOL)

Great pics — thanks for sharing — guess the pheasant tail nymph is a favourite fly over there?!?!? LOL LOL — seriously I believe pheasants are native to that area so there should be healthy population (and thus good supply for tying materials) — and I loved the mosaic (looks like it might have been influenced by the movie “A River Runs Through It”) — the graffiti is cool too — again thanks

Good advice so far — and I have to agree that for most part kits aren’t the most economical or even the best way to get into tying — the quality of materials and certainly the vise & tools are not generally that good — few exceptions even some good “kits” put together by fly tying specialty shops or even some manufacturers — best to try out some different vises etc. by either joining club and going to tying sessions (usually selection of vises/tools to use) OR got to your local fly shop and take lessons and try out some different vises — lots of quality vises and tools at not overly expensive price point — and most will last for long time (many with life time warranties) — will be money well spent in long run — AND more economical too

Caught the film festival here in Toronto couple of weeks ago — whether clips or teasers it certainly motivated you to want to go fishing — although I must admit a fly fishing film festival is not the best place for a first date with a non-angler > well, at least I did find out whether she could put up with a crazy fly fisherman or not (guess when she left before the intermission that told the tale) — oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained BUT the films are pretty incredible — I’ll be going again when the tour hits Burlington, Ontario later this month

I’ll bring a few Canadian (Ontario) microbreweries to the list:
1) Creemore Springs Lager
2) King Pilsner (closest to real Czech pilsner I’ve ever had)
3) Church Key Old Smoke Scotch Ale
4) Neustadt Springs products including Scottish Ale, Lager, and Bruce County Premium Lager
Besides most are brewed close to some great fishing spots.

I’ll agree with consensus that Sage needs to get a writer ( Zach?!?!?) and lose the mumbo jumbo; Lamson/Waterworks needs major update; thumbs up to Abel, Fishpond, Simms; for fly shops Leland definitely great site; and I liked Stonefly Inn and 4 Rivers sites.

I’d like to nominate a few Canadian sites (OK I’m biased): Michael & Young fly shops,
