David James Duncan’s My Story As Told By Water is a great collection of essays about rivers — some very witty and interesting pieces on fly fishing — just thought I’d add that to list too

I’m wrapping up The River Why right now. I’m not sure why I hadn’t read this book before, because its been on my radar for a long time. I’ve really enjoyed it. I really like all the different perspectives and techniques of fishing he covers in there. Its been a fun read…

Like Ethan, I am just reading The River Why too — interesting read — and I’m not sure why I hadn’t gotten around to that sooner either

Just finished David Ames A Good Life Wasted — funny and yet thoughtful too — really like his writing — looking to get True Love and the Wolly Bugger next

I just was listening to one of those year-end shows they do at this time of year — recapping all the turmoil, war, and bleak economic situations from the year nearly past — and I realized that I’m thankful for all the simple things that life can bring us — for me (despite a year of highs and lows — sometimes too many lows to really want to think about), those simple pleasures have usually been with a fly rod in hand — just being out on the water taking in the amazing natural surroundings — the sounds of rushing water or bird songs or just the wind in the trees — the chance to see wildlife — the rise of a trout to my fly — the rhythm of casting a fly rod — taking the time to turn over a few rocks in the stream trying to match the hatch — taking the time to tie flies to replicate that hatch — the companionship shared with fishing buddies — the peace and contentment, the calming effect of all that fly fishing offers

Dave, great pics — thanks for sharing!!!

Personally 2008 wasn’t a bad year — well from a fishing standpoint any way — no matter how high or low it might have been otherwise, I got out on the water in some great places to fly fish — some new while others were on old familiar water.

Hopefully next year brings even more opportunities for all of us to wet a line (for some of us to even get out on the water together) — and maybe it will even be the year to catch that fish of a lifetime!!!!

Interesting thread — I smoke cigarettes (down to about 1/2 a pack a day) — and just started smoking pipe again — the pipe was a Christmas gift from a fly fishing buddy who is new to the sport and has really got into it — funny thing is he got a pipe to go along with his newfound interest in fly fishing because he thought it was part of the image of a fly fisher/outdoorsman; not a very good reason to smoke I suppose — but turns out he really likes having a smoke on the pipe during the odd break on the water (never smokes while he’s actually fishing) — I told him how I used to smoke a pipe years ago — in fact I didn’t start smoking until into my late 20s or early 30s — I was doing a lot of canoe trips as part of my work as an outdoor educator — hate to use bug repellent and so started to smoke a pipe while on portages to keep the bugs away — also thought that it might make me look a bit older (I had that babyface thing; even tried growing a beard — always got asked for my ID back then — where have those days gone?!?!? LOL LOL) — any way I guess it seemed like a natural thing for me to take up smoking a pipe (if I was going to smoke) since my grandfather who taught me how to fly fish and most other outdoor acivities always smoked a pipe — eventually I started smoking cigarettes as harder and harder to find good pipe tobacco in regular variety stores — I know all the reasons not to smoke — certainly is addictive (harder to kick than drugs like heroin) — and I have quit a couple of times (or rather tried) — I find I’m smoking fewer cigarettes since I started smoking the pipe again — and good or bad it does bring back memories of my Grandfather (just the smell of the pipe smoke — I’ve found a blend much like what he smoked) — and I do enjoy good briar and good tobacco while out fishing — so for now at least (until I fully quit — if indeed that happens) I’ll have to say that a pipeful of  tobacco and fly fishing for me does go hand in hand — part because of the memories it invokes but mainly because I actually love to smoke my pipe

Royal Coachman by Paul Schullery **** — totally agree with this 4 star rating (didn’t find it dry all the time either) — let me add a Canadian book to list, not as recent, but also worth reading: Catch And Release by Mark Kingwell — also totally agree with anything by John Gierach

I put down the small streams for brookis option — but I would say wading any river for trout including steelhead is my first choice — I love fishing for large browns at night too

Also important is to check out Writers Guidelines that most magazines have — most are very specific — and some request that you shouldn’t send query unless serious about writing article — so be very clear on what you intend to write — AND GOOD LUCK!!! — it’s a great way to beat the winter blahs!!!!

That was one of three fish that came to hand, and one of four I saw caught total.  After releasing the trout, I stood there thinking about how surreal it was to be standing in a desert, fishing for fish that should not be there in a lake that should not be there.  I figured it was as genuine as anything else in Las Vegas – certainly as genuine as the breasts on the casino waitresses.

I started walking around the pond, and came to the only thing that could cap off fake fishing in a fake city – a Fake Easter Island statue in the middle of the pond.

Interesting report — at least the fish in the picture look real — thanks for sharing — must admit I never thought of fly fishing in Las Vegas before — then I’m not one to “roll the dice” (I tend to fish at better known spots) — so you’ve proven again that fly fishing can be enjoyed anywhere under very “different” circumstances — also that fly fishing keeps it “real”
