To add another dimension to Shannon’s comment about location if your shop is not located near a great destination than the next best thing is to  be located near a population that has the means to travel. My area of Ohio has reasonable fishing opportunities for Steelhead , Smallmouth, etc  but many of my customers are the  type that take the trips to places like the Keys or the rivers in the west.

Tim also hit on a point that keeps many of us smaller guys in business. I have a growing number of customers from all over the county and  in other countries and who express more appreciation for my helping them than many of  the guys in my backyard.

    Robert,
I’d say Mike has you covered on the Ohio side of things. The rivers are known as combat fisheries by people that don’t now the rivers don’t let them dissuade you, but be ready for a little leg work. A 9 or10′ 7wt is all I ever use but a reel with good brakes is a must. The people at Mad River outfitters know there stuff but The backpackers shop http://www.steeliesonthefly.com/  is a bit closer. If you don’t mind a slight detour in your route I have plenty of loaner gear around here to set you up with.

A cat will find a way to get even with you when you are the most vulnerable. Do you really want to risk it.

The E-collar is not meant for punishment but for correction they are not the same thing. The power level in the collar is sized for the size of the dog but you don’t necessarily up the power setting because the dog has a thicker neck you use longer contacts and make sure the collar is tight enough. I see way to many people(mainly hunters) that think they can train the animal with the button and not proper training of the handler.

Great shots all around  Eric, I don’t know who’s more excited about the first duck hunt of this year that yellow lab to the left or my 11 year old son. Jake says nothing else tastes as good as bacon and eggs in a duck blind. If your looking for a good spot to talk wing shooting etc. http://www.uplandjournal.com/  is a good group.

I’d host whoever on a great lakes steelhead summit in the short term.

    Its pretty easy.

Hit is right and it can be alot of fun, and hell, 8-10 pound rainbows are the only show in town.

Throw out some dates sir! I have some PTO banked 😉

    This sounds interesting

Night fishing is definitely on our agenda, we will spend most of our time on the flies only section of the river (clay banks) to avoid the hook n heave guys. The Orvis hatch may still be on but they clear the river pretty early I have lined us up a stretch of private water for the weekend to avoid the combat conditions. All the fly suggestions are pretty common and we should have them covered ,my boxes aren’t as varied as those Eric shows but along the same lines. We will make a stop at BBT to pick up a few of the new creations, my TFO rep lives in the neighborhood so we will hit him up for some places to try as well. If the Salmon fishing gets unpleasant, there are plenty of other river in the area. It would be great if anyone is in the area and wants to wet a line or stop and have a few of the fufu beers that Dusty suggests.

    Cameron,
What’s the gizmo holding your tippet spools. Also the neck padding on my lanyard is cloth covered foam sewn together to form a tube.

I get samples of every new product that comes out and I still go back to Maxima. The only thing bad about it is the spool itself there is no locking points, and they are  bigger than most others. I haven’t found any of those tippet  minders that are worth a s*** either.

The up front cost and long term maintenance are a bit steep but I have found that a 5 year old is the perfect thing for the unwinding part and they can be trained for other useful tasks. Always be sure to ask if the daddy juice was dropped before it was
