Hmm. Not a good time to be flying into Christchurch at all. I think the airport is now closed to international flights, so if that was your initial destination, you may find you get diverted to Wellington, or even Auckland.
It’s a hellish mess in CHCH. 69 deaths at last count, and climbing.Tight lines Joel.
I will be flying into Wellington. Horrible about the quake in Christchurch. My thoughts and prayers go out to all my mates there. I hope everyone is ok.

Good to have you back Steve! And thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. All very helpful. I like to see how all walks of life look at things like this and I feel it makes me that much better at what I do.

It looks very cool indeed. I look forward to hearing what people have to say about it. I don’t trust the plugs you use when traveling internationally. I have fried a few things that way so this could be very handy!

Did I mention I was going to New Zealand again? Yep. Just found out that I will be heading there for work. I will be working there for 4 weeks and chasing trout for 2 weeks!

I will be putting my new Korkers to the ultimate test in about a month fishing the rugged waters of New Zealand. I will have a testing mate Simon Chu even testing them further after I leave. Mine will return with me to Montana where I will proceed to beat the hell out of them for the next 6 or 7 months guiding folks on Montana’s rugged waters.
Truth be told I was very impressed with these boots the second I laid eyes on them. They are so incredibly well designed I immediately set up an account with Korkers so I could carry the boots in the shop. I have always worn Simms. They are good boots but man they get heavy and the damn things never seem to dry out! The drainage in the Korkers and lack of water absorption is down right impressive! I can’t wait to test these boots in the very near future!

I met Kelly in person last week at our local TU meeting. He did a streamer presentation for us and had the rod with him. I got to play around with it a little and it seemed pretty nice.

Question: Wouldn’t an “independent” guide have a price (and profit margin) advantage over a guide that is affiliated with a flyshop? For example, he/she would not have to share a portion of the guide fee with the sponsoring flyshop?
Caveat: Obviously the guide that is affiliated with a flyshop has an instant network of potential clients. I’m assuming he/she is also covered under the shop’s liability insurance….or does a signed waiver make this moot?
Drifter, I can only speak for the Montana guide industry. Guides don’t set the prices here, outfitters do so whether you are a independent guide or work full time for that outfitter the price of the trip would be the same. The difference might be what the outfitters take is from that guide.

Neal I used to have a guide that worked for me that would go one, two, three, set when going over good looking water. It seemed like his clients would always be taking about it at lunch or the drive back at the end of the day. They would ask me “How did Pete know that the fish was going to bite when it did”? I would tell them he was a fish whisperer… I think I like blind faith better!

George Anderson is very well respected, but that test has issues. Â It’s “sciency” but in no way scientific. Â I noticed that their chief complaint with the Scott rods was that they were too stiff, but they didn’t even test the G2, which makes little sense. Â I’ve also heard the winners line up suspiciously well with that shop’s top-selling rods. Â Correlation or causation?
I wouldn’t put much stock in those reviews if I were you.

I wondered why the G2 wasn’t in there either Zach. It is my favorite Scott rod and to me seemed to cast much better at a variety of ranges than the S4 did.
