Steve, first off, nice fish!
I would check out a digital camera from Olympus. They make some real nice water resistant cameras that won’t break the bank.

Oh, did I mention that this cabin is on a lake at about 6000 ft? And that there are some really big Brook Trout in the lake? How am I doing Zach? You ready to come back to Montana yet?
That is one hell of an offer Zach! I’d jump on that in a heart beat if I didn’t live so damn far away from Atlanta! Once again my offer is still open for a Montana trip! I will even put you and your wife up at my cabin which I have attached a picture of to further entice you! (Last years Christmas card)

Wow Zach! That is some cool stuff! I could use a lesson with you! How about this, you come to Montana and give me a lesson or two and I will take you and your lovely wife on a guided trip or two. We could hit the Blackfoot river or the Clark Fork river or if your up for a hike we could pack some float tubes into some of my favorite high mountain lakes in the area.

Question for you, do you ever fish bamboo rods yourself? My father-in-law is a garage sale freak and has collected over a hundred bamboo rods but I have never played around with them before because they look so damn fragile. I’ve noticed that most of the ones he has come with two tips. I have always thought that was because they break easy. So do you think it is worth giving one of these old bamboo rods a try? And if so, what kind of line and reel would you match it up with?
Just curious. After being a member on this site for the past month, I find myself wanting to try all kinds of new things!Moosedog

I think every animal or fish for that matter deserves to be treated with respect. They all serve a purpose on this great planet and if they are going to be harvested for food then they should be able to die in a more dignified manner. I am all for a fair hunt! But nothing pisses me off more than when an animal is illegally killed or when it is shamelessly shot as this deer was in this video! Makes me sick to see that kind of crap. I wonder if guys like that would like to go down like that? Think not!!!!OK so if my picture is stored on my computer in my zoombrowser files how do I find out what the URL is for that? Sorry for being such a pain.

I think that any stream that the fish are fed pellets they shouldn’t count. However, if you are paying a rod fee to fish a private spring creek and the fish occur there naturally it should definitely count. My experience on such creeks is that the fish are very educated and hard to catch. Depuy Spring Creek outside of Livingston MT is exactly this type of creek. The fish move in from the Yellowstone River seeking cooler water and a place to spawn. I have fished this creek with clients a couple of times and even though you can see lots of big fish getting hooked up is no guarentee. I would be proud to tell someone on caught a huge fish from this creek and would not feel as if I were cheating because I paid to fish there.

I agree with Phil. I would go with the XP and a Ross evolution. I use this combo for rods for my clients and they get used and abused through out the summer and I have had no problems with them yet! Take advantage of the closeout on the XP. I don’t think you will be disappointed!

I too would get the Ross. That is a great reel for a great price espeacially with the extra spool. I am a huge fan of Ross reels. They have a great drag system and they are very user friendly. Plus if you need to switch from left handed to right handed retrieve it is a very simple process. I own six Ross reels. One Gunnison and five Evolutions and none of them has ever done me wrong. Let us know which one you go with mending machine.

I personally think the best hatch of the year in Montana is the Salmon Fly hatch. Big fish always seem to be looking up for these bugs when this hatch is going on plus it is a no brainer when fishing a fly that big! This year in Montana we had Salmon flies, golden stones, and skwallas all at the same time! It was some happy times for both fish and fisherman.
That’s my two bits, anyone else think differently?

Dunfly I love your advice. Especially about taking the wife along! In my case though it is because my wife is a really good fisherman and she is super competitive. If she catches the first fish she always says one zero or if she catches a bigger fish first and then I catch one a little smaller I hear “oh that’s a cute little fish you just caught”. Consider yourself lucky if your wife just drags the fly!
If you like to dry fly fish you should come to Montana and do some fishing. About 90% of the guides I know all dry fly fish. As a guide myself I only resort to tandum nymph rigs when the client is hell bent on catching fish or is looking to catch bigger fish. I would much prefer to have them catching fish on top as it is much more exciting. I always tie on a dropper when I am doing the dry fly thing as well. I just see it as doubling your odds.Moosedog
First I’d like to say great advice from BD. I hate when people are late and as a guide being late just starts the day off on the wrong foot. I like to get there early and just check everything over so when the client shows up I can give them my full attention. And if I heard of a guide doing those kinds of things you described I would report them to the board of outfitters. As a guide in Montana we are suppose to follow a code of ethics and certainly some of the things you described are unethical.
Pictureman you should tip your guide as you would a waiter. And it should be base on how hard they work for you and how much you enjoyed your day. It should never be based on how many fish you caught. Your guide has no control over this. Hope that helps.
