noneMemberEvery couple of years I travel to the US/Canada to meet up with friends and fish. So far my destinations have been limited to Alberta, Montana.
I think I’ll take my next trip a different approach. Rather than just heading of and see what comes around I’d like to go when that ‘magic hatch’ is in full swing. Salmon fly hatch? Hoppers? Caddis?
Which hatch would you think is THE period to go and why?
Maybe I should try different states too? But I don’t know nobody in other states to fish together with and not sure if the air connection is half way decent. Flying into Calgary cheap & direct has been of great help.
I’m from The Netherlands by the way!

Joel ThompsonMemberI personally think the best hatch of the year in Montana is the Salmon Fly hatch. Big fish always seem to be looking up for these bugs when this hatch is going on plus it is a no brainer when fishing a fly that big! This year in Montana we had Salmon flies, golden stones, and skwallas all at the same time! It was some happy times for both fish and fisherman.
That’s my two bits, anyone else think differently?

MemberIn 40 years-plus of fishing seriously in the USA and abroad, I’d say the hex hatch in Michigan (Hexagenia limbata) ranks as the most awesome ever. Really, it’s indescribable. Must be experienced to be believed.

MemberI pretty much match most of the hatches at some point during their period throughout the season, as I’m out on a regular basis throughout the season.

Cameron MortensonMemberibookje…are you fishing with guides or is this a do it yourself type trip?
I’ve fished a few “magic hatches” before but timing and being familiar with the area enough to make the trip worthwhile can be really the hardest parts.

Cameron MortensonMemberI would also look at going to a place where there might be a “magic hatch” occurring but also other options during non hatch parts of the day or if the timing isn’t quite right for the hatch to come off at all.

noneMemberThe question is: how acurate are the hatches?
It would be strange to wait for the Eagle Beatle hatch on shore and they just hatched 3 weeks ago!Oct 16, 2006 at 6:09 pm #13385theboxkid
MemberI live only 3 hrs away from the Green River and have never once tried to hit the cicada hatch.

noneMemberCameron:
Well that’s a great way to make a trip unforgetable too!
In fact, I always try to do something special in a trip but it doesn’t always work out.
Maybe I should plan the trip around such an epic experience and fish ‘regular’ around the epic part. The weird thing is that every trip should have an epic part. I mean the trip is expensive enough not to incorporate such an experience! So, yes you’re absoultely right so! Now I need the inspiration and friends to enjoy such a trip.
