Another board said the Ross Momentum weighs a ton. Did you heft it? I was thinking of selling my BG-3 (the early one with the machining marks and purple cast to the finish) to get a lighter reel.
Did you get any info on what Scientific Anglers is doing with their lines? I heard elsewhere they have new lines coming out… are they yet more ‘nitchy’ lines or something the general populace will use? Have they addressed the floatablility issues of their floating lines?
Defense mode: You tested the new BIIxT… isn’t mainly a rod built for close-in work and light presentation? Does it use the same cosmetics and components as the regular BIIx?

For a rod that doesn’t need tweaking of the action up or down I like the Rio Selective Trout. It floats… right out of the box and is as slick as any. If you need a lot more mass, try the Rio Grand. If you just need a slight overlining the SA GPX is a good bet, just prep it to float!
dmk37363, some of what you post is very old news. Tom Morgan has had his own rod line for years and years. When Woody Woodard took over as President things were going as usual… for a while. He then seemed to be hell-bent on cost-savings at any cost. That cost was quite dear. He almost rode the Winson name into the ground. Had it not been for the success of the BIIx, I’m not sure Woody or even the company would be around as we know it.
There was a period about two-three years ago when the unthinkable happened at Winston… quality went down and outsourcing came in. Cost savings rearing its ugly head! Things have been VERY stable at Winston since. Those are my picture you might have seen of the mis-aligned butt cap and guide on the BIIx’s. That was my first BIIx made when it took months to get them. The other two I’ve bought since are perfect in every way. Every once in a while you might hear of a squeaking grip but even those complaints are getting rare.
I think Winston hit a period in sales after 9/11 that not only affected them, but a lot of businesses in the industry. The difference is Winston isn’t owned by an investent firm like Sage and doesn’t have mega-bucks like Orvis. Small dips in sales for the big guys could have very well buckled a small company like Winston. Something had to give for them to survive. Without the acceptance of the BIIx I have no doubt they wouldn’t be around as we know them.
I still feel there is hope Winston will offer more options but when reps at shops who know nothing but uplocking reel seats (because that is all that BIG brand they sell offer) demand for downlocking seats fell off. If no one is demanding them the smart thing to do is reduce that inventory and spend the bucks on what sells or on R&D.
I think the rough spots are over for Winston and they very well learned their lesson. Don’t mess with success! They are about to introduce another line of BIIx’s that, from my understanding, that will be far more Winston-like in action. Things like that cost money and things like that tell me the fat lady ain’t done singing!My bet is the XP (Z-Axis or XPLXi+) will be more BIIx-like while the new BIIx models will be more like the WT!

Since you’re coming in from the east you just have to fish the Lamarr Valley. You’ll see it from the road. Cutts up the wazoo and they are big and stupid! Big, ugly foam hoppers seem to work.

– 8′ 6″, 4 wt. Winston BIIxWith as many bait and spin casting rods as they sell one would think they would have to be more critical.
That said, they don’t require registration and don’t track the rods with serial numbers like a lot of the big guns do.
The one problem I had, about 10 years ago was handled far better that my best expectations. They had a new, upgraded rod to my door in 2 days which was mailed in a postage paid tube to send the broken rod back.In the remote Smokies the brookies are opportunists since there usually isn’t an abundance of food. No need to go deep as they will come out of holes 5 feet deep to slam a decently presented dry most times. If that don’t make you grin give up all hope!
Zach… stop it! The PC thing to do is cast like the rest of us so as not to hurt our feelings! ;D

My Michigan fishing buddy says he has never felt the rod load on his back cast. His loops go beyond tight to arrow shaped, In fact, on another site the owner asked if he could use a picture of Bill casting because it shows a perfect loop on a long cast.
You might be nailing it! Many people go by the idea that if you feel the tug of the back cast you’re too late! The line is already falling and possibly creating other issues.
There is no sin in watching your back cast… especially on long casts. Some of the better casters I’ve watched look at their back cast, others don’t. In fact, I would have to say that most of the better casters I’ve watched DO look at their back cast.
You just have to work it out and find out which technique works best for you I guess!I’ll stick out like a sore thumb here but… You owe it to yourself to cast all the contenders. I have and ended up with not one but three BIIx’s. After I sell my 7 weight Scott S3, number four is on order!
I like that series because of the broad usable range they comfortably handle, the fact they weight less than the others (and feel FAR lighter in the hand) and they are simply a joy to catch fish on.
I have an old Scott G that’ll go to the grave with me! It is one sweet, sweet rod! Limited in range to close work, but a pure joy to use! I tried the G2 hoping to love it but left thinking, ‘what was the point in making it?’ The SLT’s I’ve cast felt as numb through the middle section of the blank.
I admit it… the BIIx series spoiled me rotten! Enough, in fact, to sell of a few classic GLX’s to get them!
To each his/her own but I can list 10 people off of the top of my head who swore they would never spend X amount on a rod… until they cast the BIIx!
The very few you see for sale are usually from people who expected a ‘fast’ rod (even though Winston calls it that) and wanted to throw sinking lines with it. Though they will do that, there are far better rods out their for that limited job!my 2 centavo’s! 😉

Time: 8:00 am til it is over. Usually around 3:00 pmThis year, Kent Edmonds wiil be holding a program on Fishing for Shoal and Striped Bass. Kent has also been kind enough to donate a 1/2 guided trip for 2 that can be used to go for the Shoal Bass, Stripers or can be used at Calloway Gardens.
As always, there will be great BBQ cooked by our own Gold Star BBQ (B983), door prizes and auction items, and RocketRoy’s now famous Casting Competition. We are also going to hold some tying classes for both beginners and kids as we did at the Fall Fling. More information will be coming forward on these events by the folks that will be holding them.So set aside the date on your calander and come have a great time.
Zach, NGTO has a competition coming up mid-March. I plan on going. How about it?
Sure would be nice to get together with someone else who enjoys casting!Zach, Simon say’s (I love being able to say that! ;D) that if you are dumping the cast you probably don’t have a big enough fly on it. I have the same problem when casting a sink tip for distance. Mr. Rajeff said it’s probably not enough overhang.
I haven’t tried either remedy yet but you can bet I will now!I have cast the ZG. My first impression was, zero gravity it ain’t. If it was any lighter than the rods I prefer I could buy the name.
The only time I cast it I was really impressed with it’s feel up close. At distance it seemed to punk out though. When I noticed that I asked the dealer if he up-lined it. He did! :-/ Sadly, as of yet I haven’t been able to give it a fair evaluation.I tend towards muted colors when fishing mainly to avoid spooking fish when the line is out of the water during false casts.
When practice casting the brighter the better.
