Anybody out there have an opinion on what would be a go-to fly for wild brookies? I’m assuming terrestrials such as small ants would be good. Remember, these are wary fish and very skittish, and often small, so I would think a streamer wouldn’t be at the top of the list.

    Just curious…

The best success I have had fishing for wild brookies is just using a plain ol parachute adams.

I’ve done well with para-adams and bushy attractor patterns–stimulators, wulf patterns, big ehc, humpies, etc.

The only experience I have had with wild brookies was on spring creeks in Colorado at the headwaters of the South Platte.

Out West the Brookies were remarkably dumb.

My personal favorite is a Parachute Adams with a moosehair tail which makes it more buoyant. I like the post to be Hi Vis yellow.

In the remote Smokies the brookies are opportunists since there usually isn’t an abundance of food. No need to go deep as they will come out of holes 5 feet deep to slam a decently presented dry most times. If that don’t make you grin give up all hope!

I get to fish for brookies quite often in the streams of Rocky Mtn National Park.
