Tim, there was a time that SA and Rio recommended against the use of detergents on fly lines. Has that changed?

Bingo! Up until it’s time to sell the rod or it just gets too slick to grip well, let it be.
Cork to me is like fine leather-wear, it has that warm, natural feel to it. I don’t much like sitting on leather sofas that have plastic slip covers over them. That is exactly what some treated cork feels like to me.
But, to each his/her own.To add more insult to injury, Ohio doesn’t even have a decent trout stream anywhere in the state.
As was told me by a huge U of M fan, the tree’s in Michigan lean south and the tree’s in Kentucky lean north ‘cuz Ohio sucks so much!

As was stated, it was pretty much plug-n-play. Load the cd, plug in the USB cable and away she went.
Tonight at our club meeting I set the camera up last-minute as our speaker was sorting through his tying material.
Everything came through, not production quality, but certainly well enough considering the low price of the camera and the lack of set up headaches.

Kelly, did you use the camera for showing your tying and if so was the depth of field?
I’m just a tad concerned being that it states that it is a document camera with possibly a DOF too narrow for tying by focusing on just a thin slice of fly!Thanks
The FFF is a great organization and I recognize that it has a different set of goals than TU, but personally I’d love it if they could find a way to work more directly together. For instance, I definitely think there could be joint TU/FFF chapters that serve both organizations at the same time. Zach
Zach, from my understanding there are many TU chapters that are also affiliate clubs of the FFF. To me that makes a lot of sense as the mission of the FFF is to promote fly fishing. TU’s mission is cold water conservation though locally many TU chapters are more like fly fishing clubs. Though the FFF does a lot for conservation, it seems pooling our resources would simply strengthen both organizations.
If no FFF club is in your area simply start one. The FFF is very good at helping you along the way from initial planning and creating by-laws to setting up your 501(c)(3) status.
The only way we got the Carolina club up and running is through the aid of the FFF and the assistance of a few good volunteers.Hello Aaron… to make any volunteer organization viable it takes many people like you to lend a hand. Thanks for your vim and vigor!
I am a working member of the FFF.
I’ve attend both regional and national conclaves. I go for the educational opportunities as well as the opportunity to hob-nob with other casting nuts!
The value I see in the FFF is the fact they make no bones about it… they are here to promote fly fishing… all species, all waters.
I have no thoughts on gaining membership but hope others have ideas to that effect. Our (your) club, the CFFC has problems bringing in the younger generation here locally.
As for donations, all we can do is assure donors that they will be given credit and press in our newsletters and on our websites as sponsors. Other than that I have no other suggestions.
Thanks for stepping up. It is great to already see the energy you’re putting into your position with the S/E council of the FFF.
Here is the scenario:
You are dining with a group of friends and see ‘steelhead salmon’ on the menu.

Now you got me thinking it must have been a chain restaurant using the same menu as I haven’t been in VA in quite some time.

It’s not like you’re slandering them or anything.I drag the slimy fly through the water to get rid of some of the slime, do a few snappy false casts to dry the fly then blot with amadou. Next it’s into the dry float container to be beat by beads, fluffed up and nicely powdered. Another snappy cast to shake off the excess powder then it’s game on!
Most times a few snappy false casts will dry and fluff the fly enough to use.
That is the main draw of using CDC to this user… in a well designed fly it tends to float naturally with little maintenace… at least until slimed that is!As for amadou… really awesome stuff. I’ve had my patch for a decade or so and it just plain sucks wet out of a fly unlike anything else you can imagine. Nothing else remotely compares that I know of.
It takes on a pile of weight in the rain, it soaks up so much water.I had a chance to cast the 6 and 8 weight BVK’s at the Asheville show this weekend.
The 6 weight was a great casting rod. Truly something I would have no problem buying if my real rod ever broke.
The 8 weight probably (hopefully?) could have used a different line on it as it didn’t really blow my skirt at all. It felt dead and lifeless in comparison to the 6. We tried it all ranges and just couldn’t wake it up.
Still, being a non-productive member of society with income to match, I’ll probably get a 9 weight but only after casting one first to make sure the 6 weight I cast was indicative of the series.Those who have seen the new rods… what do you think, are they good as is or would you wait for the blanks and throw your own components on them?
Being a new-age, modern unemployed type, I might just have to pick up one of those new TFO’s to replace the GLX 9 weight I broke while albie fishing.
As for the ReCoil guides. I really like them as snake guides but could not stand their stripping guides. The rods I had with ReCoil stripping guides I got rid of… mainly because of those guides. A double loop of metal just seems to be twice the friction and the things created a harmonic I just couldn’t abide with.
The casting portion of the comps is pure, 100% skill. The fishing, not so much. It depends on the beat you get way too much.
What I don’t care for in the new crop of fly fishing competitions is that here in the states you have accepted Euro rules.
How limiting is that? No lead, no indicators, flies on tags. Heck, it seems as though you’re just dredging a trot line along the bottom a little faster than the current. Seems to me a Tenkara rod would be perfect for those comps.
With all of the private water over there the Europeans have to fish despirately like they do, we are a far cry luckier in that we have plenty of open, clean water and great fish management policies.
I guess it’s old age but the competition I really enjoy is the competition with myself to see if I can fool that pea-brained fish who is smart enough to tuck himself in a rhodo tunnel across several different seams.

I have the Vision 2 in black and it has been babied. Never thought of selling it but…I’m glad the scum got caught!
Hopefully the judge is a fly fisherman!About the reward… there was a time I would find it hard to believe people wouldn’t do the right thing just because they can. I guess the era of ‘my, me, mine’ has taken over.
It is refreshing to know some of you out there know the feeling of satisfaction one can get by simply doing what is right.
Chances are, those fly shop owners would take care of you anyhow but to ‘dis them as being cheap. Sad.I’ve posted this elsewhere but have deep, deep feelings over the loss of such a great man and protector of my once home waters…
Having know Rusty for a few decades, I can say he will be sorely missed. It’s rare to find a person with such passion for not just the sport, but the river he protected and defended to his all too-quick ending.
We can only hope that someone else picks up the ball where Rusty left off but it seems mere mortals would have thrown in the towel long ago in battling the oil companies and others who want to rape and pillage that sacred land that was deeded to us by earlier generations of auto magnates (back when they had brains AND a conscience)
Rusty always seemed to have time for a cup of coffee and to show how to tie some of his truly great patterns.
This is a sad time for lovers of ‘The Holy Water’.Thanks for protecting these little guys and their bigger cousins:

This begs the question… what type of line/yarn is good on these rods?
Our club has two of the Joan Wulff models and the yarn is history. It just didn’t seem to last long and was a bit too slow to settle down even when new and unfrazzled.
Now that we learned the yarn they use on the Wulff models don’t take kindly to hauling, maybe we’ll get more life out of them! 😕
