MemberWell… there are a few modern classic reels I use on modern line. The Orvis CFO 123, Ross Vision and Charlton 8340C come to mind.
Other than that, a Hardy L.R.H. Lightweight sometimes adorns my 5 weight Winston BIIx.Jack Cummings
MemberRS, I throw tight loops when needed and open them up a bit when I think it’s needed. When throwing multiple flies along with splitshot and maybe an indicator a tight loop is just asking for time off to untangle. I’m willing to bet if we rigged Zach up with a set up like that you would see a change in his loop size… whether consciously or subconsciously. Most times you will find skilled casters using some sort of Belgian cast to prevent shocking the rig when throwing a mess of hardware or big, heavy flies. Regardless… from my observations it seems their loop sizes change too.
In fact, I have a friend who is quite skilled at casting who claims Rio Clouser line automatically opens your loop. Never tried that line so I can’t say it’s true for sure.Jack Cummings
MemberIn 40 years-plus of fishing seriously in the USA and abroad, I’d say the hex hatch in Michigan (Hexagenia limbata) ranks as the most awesome ever. Really, it’s indescribable. Must be experienced to be believed.

MemberDepending on your rod, most suggest uplining one or two line sizes when using commercial shooting heads. Rio 30′ heads are already upsized two sizes for you and are my favorite.
As for casting them, it’s usually best not to wave them around too much. Get the head near the rod tip, back cast once then haul like heck on the forward cast and 100′ + isn’t out of the question.
The amount of overhang of the head past the rod tip should be experimented with for your rod and capability. Anywhere from right at the head to a few feet past the head is a good ballpark.Jack Cummings
MemberI thought everyone did this!

MemberI had a couple T&Ts, an old Extra Dry Fly XL (did I get ripped on that one! :'() and a couple Horizons.
The Horizons were, in a word, SMOOTH! Great cosmetics but the thing that struck me with them is how the line just flowed out of them.
That said, I no longer own them. My tastes changed to quicker rods, especially in the heavier line weights.
I do get to fish my buddies Paradigm. If I owned it I would probably still have it.Jack Cummings
MemberJohn… did you solve the twisting problem?
I meant no ill will on the #14 gnat thing… I just never saw one that big.
Jack Cummings
MemberI was fishing a Griffith’s Gnat, size 14.
Size 14? They outta call it something other than a gnat!

MemberI try not to add input unless I’m pretty sure of my answer.
I’m sticking with my original response… with some of Zach’s tossed in for good measure.Jack Cummings
MemberI love these debates! There just aren’t enough of them to go around for my ornary arse! ย ๐
Before we speculate more, maybe we should find out what kind of fly he was using. If it’s a large dry fly, I stand by my answer. If it’s a big streamer like you used all bets are off as I’m sure the momentum of such a large, weighty fly would negate much spinning.
Sure casting in ovals causes twists as does having too much extra line out. But you’re talking at max 1 twist per stroke. The man has ‘incredible knots’ in his tippet. For your answer to work he must make an incredible amount of false casts.
How do I know? Been there… done that! Not too far off in the distant past either! One touch of laziness combined with big dry fly and light tippet a birds nest does make. Trust me on that! ย ๐ฎ ๐Jack Cummings
MemberI’ll bet you 10-1 the fly is too big for that 7X you’re using. Every false cast compounds the problem, but I bet the root problem is the fly.

MemberAn outing is gearing up at the Cherokee KOA in November if anyone is interested. It’ll be the 4th. year running for it. A good group usually shows up (not too big… not too small) and we stay in the ‘hard tents’ KOA is known for.

MemberI like the casting competitions best. There is very little luck involved and the best almost always win.
Too bad OLN downplayed the casting portion in the old Masters format.Jack Cummings
MemberLooks like we’re both correct, Zach.
After a little research, it seems Henshel and Hayden also offer Type III anodizing.
If you go to the Hayden website (Google) they explain how Type III runs from grey to black.
I would have very conveniently just copied and pasted the info but whover runs this site does not, for whatever reason, offer that convenience. ย ๐Jack Cummings
MemberThe only other reel I know of that used Type III (hard) anodizing is Charlton. Type III, aside from being nearly .002″ thick (Type II = .0005″) also penetrates right into the surface.
I’m impressed that another company decided to go that way other than the usual ‘top-of-the-line’ subjects.
It wasn’t long ago you knew that if an item was anything but black it wasn’t hard anodized. I ain’t for sure that has changed.Jack Cummings
MemberThe Vision is definitly nice as well but there is still something about the solid back on the original San Miguel that really gives me the love for it.
Carter, the solid back is exactly why I waited for Ross to redo the San Miguel. One glance at it and I knew porting was inevitable.
I like the porting for weight reduction (though admittedly, not as much weight was removed as I expected) and it aids in drying out backing.
I think if Ross came out with a limited run of either the Vision or San Miguel they would have an instant hit on their hands. Ya think?Jack Cummings
MemberThe San Miguel rocks though I waited until the San Miguel XiII+ came out… the Vision.

Member$365.00! Whoa… that is pretty dear! They best be made by my American neighbors or have one heck of a warranty for me to pay that much!

MemberGOOD! Now I have an option when my Simms Guide Pants wear out!
I notice these pants have a zipper. That concerns me for two reasons, it’s just another gizmo to fail and the price of Simms waders went up a couple hundred beanski’s when they added that little detail.
Any word on the price of those trousers, Zack?Jack Cummings
MemberThanks Z-Man!
