I am looking at getting a 30 ft fast sinking shooting head for my eight weight setup. Looking for something to help get deep while fishing lakes. I have never used one before. Any suggestions?

If deep is definitly what you are after then you could go ahead and start with the leadcore LC13 made by cortland its cheap so you can afford to experiment with it, for an 8 wt you are probablly going to want to use 28 or 29 feet of that instead of 30 though.

Depending on your rod, most suggest uplining one or two line sizes when using commercial shooting heads. Rio 30′ heads are already upsized two sizes for you and are my favorite.
As for casting them, it’s usually best not to wave them around too much. Get the head near the rod tip, back cast once then haul like heck on the forward cast and 100′ + isn’t out of the question.
The amount of overhang of the head past the rod tip should be experimented with for your rod and capability. Anywhere from right at the head to a few feet past the head is a good ballpark.

I use Orvis Depth Charged 350 grain 30’ head on my 7 and 8 wt rods. It’s a great line and you can get it on sale if you look long enough. I highly recommend an integrated line no matter what brand.

It will take some time to get used to and if you are not in a boat you might be disappointed. The running line floats a little but if it is in the water it will limit you’re casting distance greatly.

I have a Cortland 444 Change a Tip line on there now. Will the running line from this still be ok with the head? Thanks for all the advice

I’m pretty sure that only the first 15 feet or so come off that line when you change the tips then you’ve still got the back end of the taper built into that running line.
