    Hey Jack –

The Charlton type three is analogous to the Lamson coating, but what I liked about the Lamson one is they’ve stopped trying to fight the color issue.  As I understand it, type three anodization is naturally kind of a mottled steel gray color.  TFO’s new Hayden Reel is a good example of this (it is also type three anodized).  Charlton as I recall had a hell of a time getting that coating to look more or less black, but Lamson has left it gray, and, for the first time, added texture.  That textured finish is to the best of my knowledge new and it looks and feels great as well as being tough as nails.  I didn’t see any irregularities in coloration and if there were any, they’d be hidden by the texturing.

Looks like we’re both correct, Zach.

After a little research, it seems Henshel and Hayden also offer Type III anodizing.
If you go to the Hayden website (Google) they explain how Type III runs from grey to black.
I would have very conveniently just copied and pasted the info but whover runs this site does not, for whatever reason, offer that convenience.  😉

JRyall used to put type III anodizing on their reels.
