Hey Jack –
The Charlton type three is analogous to the Lamson coating, but what I liked about the Lamson one is they’ve stopped trying to fight the color issue. As I understand it, type three anodization is naturally kind of a mottled steel gray color. TFO’s new Hayden Reel is a good example of this (it is also type three anodized). Charlton as I recall had a hell of a time getting that coating to look more or less black, but Lamson has left it gray, and, for the first time, added texture. That textured finish is to the best of my knowledge new and it looks and feels great as well as being tough as nails. I didn’t see any irregularities in coloration and if there were any, they’d be hidden by the texturing.
