MemberI’m starting to think I’m the only member of the board who fishes Thomas & Thomas rods, and one of the few who has cast them. It has become increasingly difficult to find distributors, and I understand they had some customer service problems for a spell, but they make beautiful casting rods and the cosmetics are first class (I especially like the LPS line). For those who have tried them what were/are your impressions, and why do you think they’ve never grabbed any more of the market than they have?

The Itinerant AnglerSplit –
I can honestly say I’ve only seen them in person a couple times.

MemberI’ve not known enough T & T and Abel owners to formulate my own opinion, but have heard the same sentiments expressed by others. I’ve read posts and heard several salt guys bemoan the pretentiousness of Abel Reels, but think nothing of plopping $700 down on a Tibor because there is this notion that it is more of a working man’s reel. Same can be said of a lot of rods in that a $600 Winston is somehow more practical than a $600 HS II. I kind of credit St. Croix’s ad campaign of a few years ago that suggested that fishing cheaper equipment equals a better fisherman for the sort of reverse discrimination/sentiment that is popular today.
Anyway, should we ever organize a board get together I would be more than happy to look down my nose at you while you cast one of my T & Ts. 😉

MemberPersonally I think the Tibor is a much better reel than the Abel anyway.

MemberI had a couple T&Ts, an old Extra Dry Fly XL (did I get ripped on that one! :'() and a couple Horizons.
The Horizons were, in a word, SMOOTH! Great cosmetics but the thing that struck me with them is how the line just flowed out of them.
That said, I no longer own them. My tastes changed to quicker rods, especially in the heavier line weights.
I do get to fish my buddies Paradigm. If I owned it I would probably still have it.Sep 29, 2006 at 3:26 pm #13161jgary
MemberIt is funny how certain companies get an “image.”

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s true; T&T make well-renowned speys.

MemberZach–
Let me dig around in my bone pile and see if I can find it. Over that twelve-year period, my collection of tackle brochures has moved from Dallas to Colorado Springs to Austin and back to Dallas again, so I’m not sanguine about finding it.I would like to see the catalog again, too– I’m curious if what offended me then would offend me now. Maybe I was just put-off by the $400 price tag for a G Series rod back then.

noneMemberI always thought Scott & their users were snobs. Just fishing with them to make them different from the whole world who fished with Sage.
T&T were the uber-snobs. Probably people who don’t even know how to fish. Just being exclusive…
Well, just joking guys.

MemberI have dealt with T&T twice and that was twice too many.

MemberI bet it gets even harder to find a retailer who carries them.

MemberI dug around this weekend and the earliest Scott catalog I could find was from 1996.

MemberI’ve cast the Helix rods and the Vector rods I thought they were some of the best rods I ever cast and I don’t know why I don’t own at least one. I have never seen anybody on the water with a T&T rod. I own 3 Scotts 1 Winston and 1 Sage rod and a couple of Sage and Abel Trout reels

MemberI have had two of T&T’s rods, a 8′ 4 wt Paradigm and a 9′ 8 wt Vector (the Vector has been sold).

MemberCasual reader of the board. First post. I like the diversity of topics and keep coming back when I have some time. Thanks for a great board, Zach.
This topic caught my eye since I am a T&T “select” guide (their term). I’d be happy to try to answer any questions about the rods. Zach, next time you are in Rogers, and I’m around, you are welcome to cast them.
T&T is a small company that started out nearly 40 years ago as a cane rod manufacturer. They still make fine cane rods. With their lineup of cane and many double handed rod models, they have a strong following in the more traditional flyfishing markets.
Just a few comments about the models I have:
Light Presentation Series – this is an upgrade to the older Paradigm model which was built to mimic the feel of a cane rod. The Paradigms can still be special ordered. The LPS is a little faster rod but still excels as a small nymph, wet fly/dry fly rod. I simply don’t fish streamers on my 4 and 5 weights. This is a finesse rod.
