Since Zach can’t post any of his shots, here’s a few from my day trip down there on monday.
Short story… same gale force winds that zach had, managed to pick up about a half dozen small to medium bones (saw a ton though), but no permit or tarpon (can’t say we really targeted thse either, though). This is the second time i’ve done the pesca maya day trip, and while fun, i was hoping for at least one fish in the 3-5 lb range. But with the sigting conditions – rough, and intermittent sunshine – maybe it wasn’t even feasible to go after those bigger fish.
Zach.. you need to pass along some tips on casting in that wind!! I usually think i can hold my own iwth casting, but wow, was that tough. Downwind wasn’t so bad, i was finding my distance being limited by the amount of line i could backcast into the wind, given that i could shoot 30 feet or so on the forward cast. Accuracy was hard to, given you had to aim 20 feet left or right of the fish to compensate.
PS. what did you think about that gravel road?
I upgraded last summer from the 28-135 to the 24-105L, and while you obvioulsy get what you pay for with the L glass, the 28-135 is a pretty solid lens for the money.
Do what i did when i couldn’t decide on my last lens… order both from a decent place with a return policy, play with them for a week, and send one back!
I have a 12’6 2 hander that i use for steelies in michigan, either swinging streamers, or dead drifting stuff.
Here’s a couple shots from a steelhead guides fly box. Lots of hex type nymphs. Also, lots of eggs. I like the nuke eggs, and also Estaz eggs – basically a nuke egg but with estaz yarn for the center. Variations on orange are a good place to start. Also orange centers with white and oregon cheese outsides.

This may not be a direct answer to your questions, but heres my experience…
I am shooting with a 30D, my brother is shooting with a 40D that i have done some test driving with, and i got to play with a 50D.
This is Mickey, she’s 11, and does alot more of this than anything else now. The one advantage is when fishing, she doesn’t swim out after rising fish anymore.
Michael, i meant to respond to this earlier. I used to do alot of the same things your doing – study camera settings on other photos, try and figure out what lens it was, what kind of film, etc.
Nomad, talk to me a little bit about your gear there – looks like you have a setup of hot lights and flashes?
I am by no means an expert on this stuff at all, but i have been playing with video a little bit since i got my mac and imovie.
Joel, we did that exact trip a couple years ago, give me a ring (i’ll pm you the number) and i’ll fill you in on the skinny.
I would give him 13 or so, based on what i saw, it depends if you submit to the “1 inch point rule” to count, or the “if stevie wonder can feel it, i count it” rule! Another interesting note, you notice how his right beam is significantly narrower, and has more junk on it than the left? Often times that is caused by an injury the previous year or during the antler growing season to a leg or body part on the opposite (left)side of the animal as the deformed antler (right).
Zach, i’ll take that as a compliment! Its actually been a phenomenal year for my dad, brother, and myself. Both myself and my brother harvested our personal bests bow hunting in michigan, only to go to iowa and blow those out of the water. My dad also scored a personal best for michigan just this week with his muzzleloader (shooting a buck i had at 6 yds with my bow, but i couldn’t shoot him because of self-imposed 1 buck per year rules on our farm).
Will, that buck is rubbing his faace on that stick… obviously, right? All deer have scent glands in the corners of there eyes, and deposit that scent on licking branches and rubs as a way of communicating with other deer in the area.
I played around with my brothers 40D this weekend, (i have a 30D) and its a great shooting camera, although in the 20 or so shots i took with his i couldn’t see a significant difference between the 40d images and the 30d images.
