The Itinerant AnglerI’m taking a break from reviewing medical records to revive a post that never loses its appeal.

MemberCan some one please explain this whole fishing dog thing to me, especially guides that take dogs on floats. I personally do not like it when a guide has a dog in the boat. One more thing that can distract the guide from doing his job. Don’t get me wrong I like dogs, but I have not need to have one with me when I guide.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Phil –
If you’re aware enough to be asking the client up front, it’s no problem. Chances are I would say yes myself – I like dogs. But I’ve been in a situation where a dog was a distraction when I was supposed to be working as well as fishing, and it’s somewhat annoying. If your local shop has banned dogs, it’s possible they had a complaint that you didn’t know about – maybe not even about *your* dog, you know? I am not trying to be critical, I am just expressing this to speak up for people who are maybe too polite to ask a guide not to bring a dog. If you are checking up front though, then I think you’re good.
Also, I love that second picture.

Mark SchaferMemberThis issue seems to come up in varying degrees on other boards and is a bit like Poundermonkey and the true Steelhead argument . There is always much spirited debate with both camps having valid points but no clear decision. For me the worst part of not taking the dog is facing him when I get home

David AndersonMemberOk, I admit it, I don’t like dogs because I was attacked by one when I was 4 and it’s left a lasting impression..
That said, I do like some dogs (quiet ones that don’t eat children) and sometimes wish I had one while fishing- the pointers and labs appeal the most.
Last time I went fishing with a dog was with Morsie and ‘Bobo’ (RIP :'(),
she was a lovely cattle dog and never in the way on the river, though once, when we went in my then brand new car, she took a bit of a dump on the back seat..www.dsaphoto.com
A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

MemberI wish I could take my dog but she is way to crazy so I cannot recommend pointers on fishing trips unless your dog is mellow.

MemberThis is my baby girl, Sage, hanging out in central pa with me…. she likes to lick trout, cows, and steal grade 1 dry fly necks on occasion.

Colin M.MemberAwesome fishing partners…Here’s mine…as a rule he stays on the bank until I’m done fishing a stretch, then he gets to have at it after wards…
Here he is trying to tell me where to cast next…(he loses interest in the fish the moment they are landed)

I think he may have some serious identity issues… 😀

Colin M.MemberI should also note that when I have him with me, noone ever even thinks about crowding around me…sort of a bonus….

MemberThese are some great shots and I can tell the owners and dogs enjoy the fishing, and the part after the fishing.
I have a boxer and he is a little to high strung for me to take him to the river.Feb 12, 2009 at 11:52 am #33781
Steve K.MemberMeet Bailey…the almost perfect dog.
He loves to go fishing as long as he has enough room in the boat to take a nap. He’ll retrieve ducks and geese and will worry you to death with his vast collection of tennis balls. He’ll bark only when a stranger approaches…….. but wouldn’t bite unless you look and smell like a biscuit.
