Works awesome, I have a bunch more footage from a second tarpon trip with the camera on my head with a headband mount.
I’ll second Walt, been fishing with him for almost 20 years. He’s in alaska thru about the first week of august so your going to have a hard time getting a hold of him. You can leave him a message, and Dorie might call you back, she is watching the dogs and the house while he is gone. Jeff is a great guy too, fished out of his boat a couple times. Both of them big time into 2-hander’s also.
Lots of walk-in access. Hit the Green Cabin in the Flies Only. If your up for some fun, do a night trip for some mouse action. It’s the only way to trout fish late in the summer like that.
Walt’s got a damn cool boat too…
Be a little careful getting in the water – tarpon are typically in a little deeper water than what you would typically consider “flats” water, and hammerheads and the likes love to come up and cut wore out tarpon in half, as well as anything else that is hanging around.
Having said that – i did jump in the water a fish a couple weeks ago – it was awesome!!

http://ericdewitt.zenfolio.com/p1033976253Mike, most of them were basically shot with one or two alien bees set to each side and acting as fill with the sun in the background. The first one, I staggered the lights down the line of bikes, so there was fairly even light down the line. The second and third had a light to each side, and slightly behind the subject. I used just the 7″ reflectors for a lot of them since i needed all the power i could get to kill the ambient when the sun was still up. Once the sun set, I put a shoot thru umbrella on one of them for the front light, and was using the bare 7″ reflector as a back light. On most of them, you can see some of the shadows to get an idea on the light placement. The 7″ reflectors can be a little harsh, but I thought it actually worked pretty good considering the subject.
I’m still learning a lot with the off camera flash, and looking at some of the shots now, some seem a little overlit. But, when you get it right, there is definitely a different look to the images that can’t be achieved with natural light.
Here is the one setup shot i took – need to remember to take a few more next time.
John S. – a few comments for you an addition to the great info posted above:
check out http://www.lensrentals.com/. I’ve used them for a couple of commercial job to rent specialty lenses and have had great luck with them. That would be a great option for a vacation trip or something to rent some good glass and try it out. I’ve also used the return policy of sites like adorama and bought 2 and sent one back after a week.
Its really hard to find a one lens does it all type of package. the 70-300 is a great lens, but one thing to understand is that on a rebel body because of the 1.6 crop factor it becomes something like a 112-480. This will be great for wildlife and things like that, but not very useful for capturing moments of a family trip – unless your doing it from the other side of the street or river! You may want to combine the 70-300 with something on the wide end – either the fixed canon 28, or maybe even the 50/1.8 (thats the best $100 you will ever spend on a lens!). If you want something with a zoom, the ef-s 17-85 is a great lens. And if you want to go really wide, the ef-s 10-22 is awesome – i even have one i’ll sell ya if your interested!!
In just the last post, you mentioned light and small, and you mentioned taking your camera along on your pack trip… that is the canon 50 1.8, light, small, and cheap. And a great walk around lens, it is the one on my camera the majority of the time. It would be the perfect lens for your pack trip.
With regards to the L glass – you need to decide where you want to go with your photos and how much you want to spend to get there. If you’re going to just be printing most of this stuff 4×6 and its just going into a family album or on facebook for others to enjoy, i would advise saving the money. If it’s going to become a serious hobby, or printing large format images, then think harder about the lenses.

Here’s a couple of mine from a shoot earlier this week for some custom bike builders. All of these are virtually straight out of camera, with only a little bit of contrast, and maybe a touch of fill added.
