MemberI have been watching this thread for a couple days and havne’t had a chance to respond yet… Alot of people have made good points on both sides that i agree with, but i wanted to make a comparison to the other outdoor sport alot of people spend alot of time doing… deer hunting.

MemberI would start at probably an 1/8 to 1/4 sec, and you can go up past a second or however long you want.

MemberI bought a full sinking line on ebay, and cut it up into a few different length heads (10′-18′). Depending on what your doing, it can work really well. I use loop connections, and run about 20′ of floating line behind it, and then running line. I have a version of the orvis tips you found, and i found they are not long enough (ie. don’t get deep enough) for what i need to do. This kind of setup works really well for roll casting big, heavy streamers – you just have to make sure your are stripped all the way in to the heavier line or, like zach said, it won’t cast for anything.

MemberI am looking for a new bag for an upcoming hunting trip after Northwest destroyed my cabelas roller-bag.
Eric DeWitt
MemberLooks like it will be a trip to remember, zach, thats for sure.

MemberI’m not sure which crystal your talking about, and when exactly you’re gonna be in town, but the Pere Marquette is about 45 min. north of the muskegon, and it is great.

MemberI had to leave a fly at the security checkpoint that was still attached to my leader.

MemberThere is an article in the latest Fly Fisherman about alaska fishing that has a sidebar about bead eggs. They use 6 and 8mm beads, and coat them with various colors of nail polish to give them the transluscent look. Supposed to be deadly. They attach the bead to the line with a toothpick. I have also heated up a hook and pushed the beads on to it. I like nuke eggs (a yarn variation) and i sometimes will tie in a couple pieces of tinsel or crystal flash for a little added spark. Estaz eggs – basically a nuke egg with a estaz yarn core – work really well also.

MemberIts reasons like this that whenever i am partolling for tresspassers on our farm here in michigan during deer season i always take my firearm with me when confronting violators.

MemberZach.. looks like you can do it with a canon.
Eric DeWitt
MemberOK.. i’ve done some more research and learned a few things. 1st, the focusing distance is measured from the film plane and not the end of the lens like i was, that makes a pretty big difference. Also, the retailer web site i was looking at the specs on lists the distance as 1′, for the macro but canon’s website lists it at 7″, apparently someone thought the would just round to the nearset whole number. Small but big difference.
Zach, you think 60 like yours is the way to go? Canon also has a 100…. for a few more $$$$.

MemberAll of the above advice is great, one thing i would add is to overline your rod by several sizes, especially if you are not going to be making long casts.

MemberI have taken my canon digital rebel alot of places, including canada at -20 hunting whitetails, trekked all over new zealand, boats and kayaks down rivers, all kinds of stuff and they are pretty tough.
Eric DeWitt
MemberThanks for the good info zach, before the 30D i had the 300D Rebel.

MemberAnother really cool thing in photoshop is the use of “adjustment layers”.

MemberShoot… there are to many of them to list. Grand Slam, as well as some of the other fish close ups, and Highwater is great. I check a few times a week, and often take a look when coming up with ideas for my own shots.
Zach, i mentioned this once before to you i think… I know you are using the photos to support your writing, but man, it could easily be the other way around! Alot of these photos could easily be sold as fine art prints, as your stuff is as good or better than alot of the other stuff that is out there in this genre right now. You also have developed a style that is pretty unique compared to the others… I’ll stop now before your head gets any bigger! lol.. besides my wife is yelling at me to get off the computer..
