As far as the $150 camera article, if people are reading that and coming away from it thinking Rockwell is saying that the p and s is a better camera, i think they are missing the point.

MemberThat is a good one too, and my 8 mp 30D is right in the middle of the green.

MemberGreat illustration zach, i have tried to explain this to people several times. This is exactly why the jump from a 6mp to a 8 or 10mp is pretty insignificant, especially if only printing 8×10. Going from a 6 to 8 mp only yields about 1 or 2 inches larger image at printing resolutions.

MemberMy advice would be to stick with the reputable ones like amazon, b and h, and adorama.

MemberI’ve heard pretty good things about that lens.

MemberI just got the canon digital elph sd800is based on the recommendations on kenrockwell.com.

MemberAs Buzz said, you are going to quickly find that no matter what lens you have, it won’t be long enough.

MemberI wanted to chime in here with my .02 on the jpeg vs. raw debate. I shoot almost exculsively jpeg (lg/fine). My old camera is a original digital rebel, and i now have a 30d also. I have prints on the office wall right here that are 20×30, printed from the 6 mp digital rebel jpegs, AND THEY LOOK GREAT!! When i am printing photos, i use a minimum resolution of 150 dpi. This number came from years of printing large format presentations developed in photoshop for architectural presentaitons. Anything more, and we were wasting megabytes and time. If i can i certianly do print my photos at higher or native resolutions, but if i want to go big, i don’t hesitate for a second to upsize (going in 10% steps) till i hit the size i need at 150 dpi. This theory doesn’t hold true for magazines and the like, but for printed work on a wall, viewed from a couple feet away it works great.

MemberWe do have snow here now, about 18″ up by the PM from what i understand. I live a couple hours south near holland, right in the lake effect snow band area. We have about 6-8 on the ground here.
The PM is a great river, and changing for the better for the most part. The Flies Only went to no-kill, which makes it a great, although pressured, section. I have been spending some time in the upper parts, above M-37 and although there aren’t as many fish, there are virtually no people. And you would be suprised how many 18″ers are around up there.
I did all the editing (although pretty minor stuff) on these pics in Lightroom, i finally sat down and figured out how to use it, and i think it does alot better job than photoshop for the minor editing and color tweaks. Best of all, its not destructive editing, as it stores your changes to the images (even jpegs) in a separate file. I also really like the rating and filter systems, makes it real easy to edit a shoot down to the keepers.

I’ll get some more photos up here in the next couple days, i have a pile or them that i finally have the time to sit down and go thru.

MemberI’ve had good luck with Nuke Eggs, Estaz Eggs, and also bead eggs in lake michigan tribs.

MemberI have the same tripod as Zach, and i ahve no problems with it.
Eric DeWitt
MemberThe coolest thing about lightroom is that you can work on jpegs and it saves the edits in a seperate file, similar to a recipe for raw files.
Eric DeWitt
MemberZach, i checked into some of those types of adds when i was shopping around for a 30d.
Eric DeWitt
MemberHey zach.. i appreciate the criticism, especially coming from you, you have alot of great work and talent yourself.
