Don, you are correct, i have been shooting the 30D for about the past year, and the 300D before that. I got a 580EX flash around x-mas time, and have been playing with that quite a bit. As i understand it, in ETTL, the camera should be able to detect when there is enough light to obtain a good exposure with a decent shutter speed, and the flash only is needed for fill. It then should set the flash output at the appropriate level for fill automatically. Somtimes, it seems you still need to add some compensation.
What the nikon system seems to do better (or maybe its the nikon users?) is balance the flash exposure with the ambient exposure so as to not get the deer in the headlight looks, or the nasty shadow behind whatever is in the foreground. Part of it may be the higher sync speed (1/500 vs 1/250) of the nikons. Zachs last couple photos of the flies on the blog are a great illustration to this, without looking at the exif, you can’t tell there was a flash used at all. Zach, did you use compensation on these shots?
I am not all that impressed with how my flash pictures turn out with a canon system, so take this with a grain of salt.
Another cool thing i like is the easy number rating system, just hit a number, 0-5 as your are flipping thru, and then you can sort and view based on the rating system.
I’ve been doing the exact same thing Ian, i was going to get a post going this week on that and some other workflow issues i wanted to get input from others on.
I haven’t been listening via itunes, and these are about the only podcasts i’ve tuned into so i don’t have much to compare to, but i’ll try and get over there to give a couple thumbs up. I just listened the the lefty kreh one, and my only comment would be lefty was a bit hard to understand a couple times. I’m not sure if this was more related to the 82 years of age – which then there isn’t much you can do expect ask him to speak up, or is somehting that may be able to be cured with a better/different recording setup. All in all, i am pretty impressed though – good use of music, editing is good, conversation flow is good, and content is great.

I use them on a couple of my telephotos, but not that often on my wider lenses. On my tamron 17-35, it is wide enough that it probably only blocks light for about 10 deg on each side from the 180 deg available to the front of the lens (does that make sense?). A well places hat, hand, or anything handy will work alot better in some of situations, and a hand is always with you! I heard a local guy say that the nikon film school teaches that using lens hoods is the easiest way of improving the quality of your photos. Use them or not, you still need to learn to spot flare in your photos in the viewfinder.

Zach, and others, i really appreciate the criticism. Discussions like this is how we all learn and get better. Let me say, i spent 6 years in architectural school, getting critted every week by professors and preofessionals that, at times, brought some of the students to tears. I have learned to really like the a constructive crit, and know not to take anything to personally. So, don’t anyone worry about offending anyone – this is some great feedback for everyone interested in capturing moments on a trout stream, and especially for those interested in getting better at it!
Picture 1 – zach and matt, i agree wtih all the comments. The ones you mentioned zach were pretty much what i was thinking as i editied it. The situaiton on the river that moring was that we had fish on gravel, the sun was coming up, and other boats were coming down behind which would probalbly push them off once the light got on the water. I saw the shot, but couldn’t get any lower in the water to get some more skylight behind – i really wanted to get the reel and hands in the shot, and not in the trees. It probably would have helped to take a couple steps in, but that may have hurt the tree skyline. I am going have to give this one another shot. I agree with you Will about working through a idea or concept, sometimes i think it takes quite a few tries to get the shot right.
How often does the sitution above happen to others? Stuck between getting the shot, and getting the fish? Sometimes i have a hard time knowing which one to go after.

Picture 4 – Here is another shot from that series. Better composition with fish coming towards the camera, but the fish should probably been an inch higher to get eye out of the water.
Picture 5 – You are right about the colors zach. The fish should be a bit more balanced. I haven’t quite figured out fill flash with the canon’s, and i think nikons seem to do a much better job with it – but that is for another post i’ll do later. I re-edited it (on my laptop, so the colors aren’t 100% perfect) and it looks better. The skintones maybe need to be brought back up a bit, probably a job for
In dirty water, i don’t think it much matters. I clear water i think it might help. The last couple lines i have bought have been olive/dun colored, i figure it can’t hurt, especially if you don’t have trouble seeing or need the help to see the line. One additional note, we fish glow in the dark lines during the Hex hatch, and also when skating mouse flies at night, and it doesn’t seem to bother them at all, and we use at the longest maybe a 5′ – 10 lb leader for that stuff.
I really want to do some snorkeling or scuba diving in my local river this summer, and i have a underwater Nikonos V camera from the scuba days, if i can, i’ll get someone to cast a couple lines over me and try to get some pics.
Richard, what lens pen do you use? I have a couple of them from Leupold, they give them to you with the a purchase of a scope. I have used them to clean my lens, but i’m not sure if they are good enough to do the sensor? You can see a pic of it on this page.
I also have a “Specgrabber”, but it fell out of the case a couple times inside by bag, so i am a little hesitant to use that too. I’ll swing by the local shop and see what they reccomend also.

Honestly, i would think if you are will to pay almost $700 for somthing that only gives you a 4″ screen, pay a couple hundred more and get a small laptop (12″ or less) and then you can view them at a decent size, edit them, and whatever else you want.
