MemberI don’t think a mountain lion population would be more dangerous than a bear population.

The Itinerant AnglerIf you guys have a few minutes, I suggest listening to the excellent This American Life podcast with Ira Glass (it’s the NPR radio show just rendered as a podcast.)

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s got a cat’s build, but it’s holding itself up like a deer.

MemberIt does look like a cat, but it looks relatively small compared to the vegetation.

Memberthe front legs definitely aren’t deer legs but (and its a fuzzy photo) it looks like the color of the fur on the head and the legs are of slightly different color than the rest of the body.

The Itinerant AnglerIt does have a bobcat’s build, but it seems too big to me, and, uh, the wrong color:
Compare:

Still, I think I have to go with a bobcat there.

Memberyeah, its had to tell without any kind of scale there but I think your right, a bobcat darkened somehow.

MemberYou definately can’t see any markings, but it could be a function of dim lighting and the cat is in its summer coat.

MemberIt could be a mutt of one of these breeds:

MemberWell, one thing’s certain – it isn’t a mountain lion.
I don’t think it’s a deer – the back legs aren’t built right. I personally believe it’s a big bobcat. A big male can be up to 30-40 lbs. It’s hard to judge scale by the photo, but a 35-40 lb. cat is certainly within the range of reason.

Memberthere was a little too much info to read everyones post, but, I spend quite a bit of time on Cumberland Island, and there is a black panther or two at least on the island.
