Looking forward to hearing from Derek, i actually met him at a local art fair in michigan (grand haven) right after he quit whatever he did for a job before painting full time, and was still living here. Seemed like a cool cat, i should have bought some of his stuff before he got so popular!!
You’re right zach, i went back and looked at the original and last one of the brown is a touch soft. I guess I was so excited about the colors and the spots, it still got 5 stars in lightroom. haha. It was shot at 1/60, which is lower than i would have liked, but still should have been fast enough to eliminate camera shake. So, it probalby was a little bit of fish movement. I so would have liked to take some more time with that fish to get everything just right, but it was SO COLD that morning, your hands just went numb once they touched the water.
This is where the Auto-ISO feature you guys have enjoyed on most of your nikon’s would be great. I believe its on a couple of the newer canon’s – maybe the 5d mk2 – i guess thats another reason to upgrade. Its nice when the cameras “just work” and you can concentrate on composition, color, focus, etc when you only have a few moments with the fish.
All the shots except the 2 spey rods and the head on brown streamer shot were with the 10-22.
Its definatly a unique river. I would love to have taken a bunch more shots getting the fly in the mouth and the rod into the picture, but the water was hovering around 41 deg,, and sticking your hands in for more than just a few seconds left them useless clubs. Oh well, maybe next time.

John, the contrast, as well as a couple other settings are turned up a bit, and it might not be for everyone, but i was going for a bit different look on these. Good luck if you make it out tomorrow.
Seriously aaron, that stuff is wicked good. I love the idea of the canyon shots, and the colors in all the shots are great, makes me think i need a D700, but i doubt that’s going to make that big of a difference.

I think anything more than a 6 wt and your kinda taking the fun out of it, if i am fishing tighter conditions where i don’t need huge distance i go down to a 3 or 4 wt!
I was watching planet earth the other night on the discovery channel, and learned that the sail fish communicate with each other using the color of the sail (i think, might have been the body) to avoid colliding and impaling one another with the nose when busting through the bait ball.
A few comments to add to the good ones that are already here…
It looks like you struggle with some of the same issues there i struggle with in michigan – a lack of compelling backgrounds depending on the time of the year. Out west the mtns. are beautiful no matter what the time is, or where zach fishes GSMNP there are great water falls and rock formations, etc. I find in michigan, in late fall before snow, and eraly spring before green up, all you get is alot of dead brown!!! Thats when you need to get creative and get some color on the angler, focus in on tighter fish and angler portraits, or use DoF to throw the background out of focus.
In the first angler shot i like the low perspective and the DoF, as pointed out, the only thing that bugs me a little bit is the rod tip being cut off. I would try a tighter framing where it is really cut off, or leave a little bit of negative space past the tip. The line of the rod and the eyes of the angler draw the viewers eye in that direction, but then it stops abrubtly when the tip is cut off.
Looking at the other fishing shots, or the one landing the fish in the net, i think they would be great framed tight on the angler, with minimal background, sometimes the background/landscape really isn’t that important.
The last 2 you just posted are actually stronger than alot of the ones in the first post (minus the red raft), nice DoF, good perspective, just leave the rod tip again.
You are also very close with the fish portraits to some really good shots, follow zach’s advice, and just shoot alot of frames. One technique i like is dipping the fish, and lifting, so you get the water dripping off. Its a sexy look for fish.
One other thing to try on the flat light (which i really like shooting in also) days is to warm up the white balance. It might not be 100% natural, but it can give that golden hour before sunset look to the images, and also help with the neutral tans and browns in the background.
And last of all, tell that poor angler to smile a little bit – fly fishing is fun!!
David – Well, there are alot of cool rigs around here, but i didn’t think i had any shots of them until i remebered my brothers youtube videos of his truck. Its an 86 chevy that he rebuilt himself, has a 383 stroker motor in it at over 400 hp, and alot of torque. He has a blower for it with the big hood scoop that would put it close to 550 hp, but he was breaking to many parts in the driveline, so he had to take it off – bummer!
Remember, this is all in 2 wd too!

Oh ya.. big turkey hunter here. There isn’t much that is as much fun in the spring (well, except trout fishing) as sneaking in on a bunch of gobbling toms in the dark. I skinned my bird last year, and have a local taxidermist that is gonna wrap it on a form so i will hopefully have a decent full strut decoy/mount like you see on TV, i can’t wait to try it.
I was diggin the GUIDE shirt too, i actually was hoping they had some for sale at the lodge, but i guess they make you earn them instead of buy them!
I didn’t worry to much about the salt water, other than wiping it down a little every now and then.
