If I decided to switch to Canon which would you recommend between the 40 or the 50D? Is the 50 worth the extra or would you get out cheaper and wait for the next body upgrade?

Lens questions
Do you think the 28-135  kit lens is a quality lens or would you go body only and shell out for something better? If so what would you recommend for a WA zoom?

I’m going from a xti to a 50d here soon. For me, the extra ‘stuff’ that comes with the 50d is worth it. If I already had a 40d, I’d prob sit tight.

The 10-22mm is a great lens, but its an ef-s lens. So, until canon allows for ef-s lenses on full frame bodies … You wont be able to update to a full frame body and still use your ef-s lenses.

I upgraded last summer from the 28-135 to the 24-105L, and while you obvioulsy get what you pay for with the L glass, the 28-135 is a pretty solid lens for the money.

I just bought a 430 EXII Speedlite for EOS 450 (XSi). I had been debating between this one and one that Chad Simcox suggested to me on another thread: Pentax 285HV, I think. But I decided on the 430 b/c the other was full manual, plus, the 430 could rotate and after I get more flashes will act as a slave to the 580EX. But the 430 runs $270 while the other is around $90.

A great Canon lens for fishing stuff is the 17-40 f4L, on either a crop frame or full frame it’s great quality and a good range.
If you add a macro lens (like the 100) it would be all you need most of the time.

The 24-105 is a good lens, though not wide enough for a lot of fishing shots IMHO on the crop frame.

I started the other Canon 50D thread and while I can’t add much to my mini review over there I will say this.  So far I’m loving my 50D, and I have yet to find anything about it which would make me send it back.

I purchased mine as the kit with the 28-135 lens and I think it was well worth the money.  As others have noted this is an excellent lens and as an EF lens (rather than an EF-S) should Canon go to full frame sensors on all their cameras (I’m sure this is coming sooner rather than later) you’ll still be able to use it.  I’m getting really sharp pictures with it without a great deal of effort and so far am quite impressed.  As an aside this lens is just over $400 when purchased alone and reviews quite well.

As to your question about the flash.  I currently use the 430EX (orignal version not the II) and find it a good fit for what I need to do.  An upgrade to a 580EX or similiar just isn’t worthwhile to me for what I do with the camera but you may feel otherwise.

Thanks everyone. Alot of my decision is going to be based on my ability to get rid of my 700. If I get a taker I’d most likely part with it.

After looking at some WA L glass I’ve decided that only a few L series lenses are cheaper then Sony’s G version. The main gripe I have now is being able to walk in a store and try out a lens or whatever for the Sony. Most places around here that carry them don’t have the high end stuff.

I’ve narrowed my camera collection down to a point that I could get out of Sony right now without taking a big hit on the money. I’ll be
