Yes, I was referring to the LMF in Broken Bow. During the summer, the place tends to be quite busy at times. I would go during the weekend if at all possible. But during the winter, you can have whole runs to yourself if you time it right. Of course, all year you have to compete with locals and salmon eggs, but this has never been a problem for me.Head to Gruene Outfitters in Grune, TX. The staff is friendly and seems to be knowledgeable. I was there a couple of weeks ago, and one of the employees told me he would be hitting the San Marcos River right now, but access can be sticky at times.
If it is trout you must have, for now you have to go to the LMF or the Guadalupe, though I do not know how the Guad. is doing these days. During the winter, the TPWD stocks the Elm Fork of the Trinity R. (Lewisville, TX (just north of Dallas)) and the Brazos R. below Possum Kingdom Lake. Earlier this year, a buddy of mine pulled out a 26″ ‘Bow from this tailwater; it seems that the hatchery was ridding itself of brood stock!

Are you in Austin, or still north? I live in Dallas, and there are trout to be had year ’round only a few hours drive from here. Obviously, we are not talking about trophies or anything other than ‘bows and the occasional brown, but they can be found.

The one I use is a small, portable unit from Orvis that runs on two D batts. The foam wheel is not as big as what Neal described, but I can get a dozen on it at one time. I believe it retails for $50. I have not used it as much recently though because I started to use Rio’s knot sense and a small UV light. That set-up has been just as effective in getting the results I want; plus, it is much faster and less of a pain as mixing the epoxies is now unnecessary.

That makes perfect sense, changing of perspective. And the bad part about all of it is I have been reading somewhat heavily lately and come across that idea more than once. I still get excited when a fish is around, so I guess all of what I spent the week reading went right out the window when my buddy yelled “Fish On!” We neophytes need you veterans to get together and write a book: Fly Fishing Photography Aesthetics, or something along those lines. You all consistently give useful advice.

All of your communications have been helpful. I have learned a lot from this thread. Thank you for your participation. Now knowing all that these flashes do, I guess I understand why some of them are in the $400-$500 range. I may have to resort to selling flyrods to be able to pay for flashes and lenses.And Jay,
Thanks for the outstanding instructions. That helps. I figured out how to do that last night from my .Mac website, which is where I keep some of my photos after I play around with them in Aperture. Previously, I had been trying to export to the desktop, then browse for them and pic whichever photo. I did not know each image had to have a URL attached, which is why it took until last night until I finally uploaded a personal avatar.
DustySounds like I need to look into photobucket! Thanks guys. Jay, what do you think so far about your new camera? Make sure to bring back some pics for us. what species does one fish for in Tanzania and Kenya. And Matt, will we be seeing any salmonid pics from Alaska while you are still up there?

Thank you, and all of the other awesome people here, for providing a positive learning environment and a great place to scratch the itch while stuck in the office.

So I only need to avoid EF-S and IS lenses to assure they will work with future bodies? what is the designation of the lenses I need to be looking for?Those are some good suggestions regarding three lenses vs. one. I guess my mentality said “one of the best rather than three good.”

I bought the XSi, sorry for the misleading post. As far as the glass, I still do not know as I need to do some more research, and save some money. I have been looking at B & H, but am having a hard time finding more than one or two options for “L” f/2,8 glass. the way I understand things, for now, I need to focus on acquiring a good f/2.8, a good 50 or 60 mm macro, and then a good wide angle lens. But, as I said, I still need to spend some time getting to understand the different lenses and their applications.John,
As always, your posts are very helpful. I wish I could have found some explanations like the ones you give that are concise and point out the pros and cons to each body. I am hoping the XSi will be a good entry point for me, a body which will prepare me for a pro body in time. I have begun to notice one problem though: most of the glass I have seen for the XSi will only mount to the rebel series and the 10, 20, 30, and 40D. I take this to mean that if and when I buy a 5D or above, none of the glass I purchase now will work with the pro body! am I correct in this?Where should I be looking for lenses, assuming my plan of lens purchase is a sound one?

DustyWell, guys, I bought one anyway, despite knowing about this commercial. I decided, after many of your replies and advice from friends, to save the money for an L series lens instead of buying the 40D. Plus, I am thinking that after I get a better grip on all of the gear, I may want a full frame, and with what I have read here lately, we may be seeing one soon if the 5D is replaced/upgraded.
I would love to give you a review, but now I do not think I could offer any helpful info. However, as a DSLR neophyte, I must say that navigating my way through this body’s controls is very easy. I broke a general man rule and actually read the manual, and it was quite helpful. That, coupled with Peterson’s input, has produced some descent pics lately.
