Tie them sparse with little to no flash

I hear this every time I am around someone talking about carp, and I tie my flies according to this rule. Now, let me add that I do not catch carp in the same capacity that you do, numbers or weight. But this weekend I pulled in a decent-sized Buffalo. Granted, it is not a carp, but cousins, maybe? I used the flashiest fly I had in my box: clouser foxy minnow.

What are your thoughts on the flash vs. no flash theory? Are Buffalo and Carp that different?

I took all of your suggestions to heed and went out Sat. morning, but the light was still a little harsh-probably should have set out earlier. But here is what I feel is the best exposure of the 75 I took:

You may want to wait a bit-I recall a thread here a month or so ago where those more knowledgeable about the industry were discussing the possibility of a new full frame Canon body, based, I believe, on the rebates Canon was dishing out for the XSi and 40D.

Just my .02, but if full-frame is something you want, you may sit back and watch.

Don’t wear polarised sun glasses when looking through the viewfinder and trying to adjust the CP

I never would have thought about this, but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense.

When I go out this weekend, I will apply all that y’all have said. I am starting to understand my camera more and what creates correct exposures, thanks to all of you and and a few websites. Hopefully, by the end of the weekend, I will have some images to show, and I/we will be able to see where the reading and advice paid off, just as long as I follow the instruction.

I am taking my bro-in-law fishing, and he has never held a flyrod. I could be digging flies out of my or his skin, which I think would make for some interesting images if I manage to get the correct exposure.

Thank you for the help guys; your explanations helped dramatically. The author may have simply been operating on some basic assumptions, i.e. the reader would have some inkling! Or maybe I just failed to apply elements he had previously discussed when I got to that quote. That’s why I’m re-reading the book.

After reading that section of the book, I looked back at some images and noticed the sky got deeper and deeper blue toward the top of the image. Only the tops were effected this way. Does this mean I did not have the filter in the correct position? I am guessing this is why the filter rotates.

I own L.L. Bean, Orvis, and Fishpond pacs. I just bought my newest Fishpond yesterday, one to carry my gear and DSLR. My opinion, Fishpond! Their pacs offer far more utilities than any other, but you have to pay for it. It also depends on whether you prefer a hip mount or shoulder mount, plus how much gear you plan to carry. Personally, I would rather grow into a pac rather than leave gear at home.

Done whole hogs…pain in the arse! Dig a hole, place some corrugate, lay in the coal/wood and light, place grill, put down the dressed pig, more corrugate, and bury. 24 hrs. later, awesome meat, but still a pain.

Smoker is the way to go. If one limits the food he/she produces, said individual can limit the attendees in his/her backyard.

I thought that the great debate in SC was dry vs. wet ribs! I know you’re right Cameron. Differing regions favor different cuisine. I just had to offer some argument.

My wife is from St. Louis, far enough away to be quite different, yet close enough to be similar. Her family makes some odd dishes, and surprisingly, many of them center around Mac & cheese. But this rhubarb thing…is that not a root?

How do you determine this?

The chapter is titled Special Techniques and Filters. It is located on page 146.

He is discussing the effects of glare, and how the use of a pol. filter has brought out more color in a waterfall. Both pics were shot in the following:
24mm lens
f/22
one for 1/4 sec. w/o pol. filter
other for 1 sec. w/ pol filter.

So, should I not worry about stopping down 2 w/ pol. filter?

My go-to rod is a Zero Gravity 906-4 SW. I use it for trout, unless they are dinky stockers, LMB, carp, etc. When they made the ZGs, it was the first rod Orvis started using Boron in, as opposed to traditional fiberglass in the butt section. If you are given the option of ZG, T3, or TLS, definitely go with the ZG. The others are fine rods, but against the ZG, there is little comparison.

I must have posted one of the older versions of this image-this last one does not look like the one I did w/ Canon’s DPP, but thanks for clueing me in to that. I’ll try gimp as well.

I do not want to part with that much change either, but my wife is working on her Master’s, so we can get the basic Photoshop for something like $200 through the college bookstore. One of the probs. though with purchasing academic software is that upgrades are not available as they would be for for full retail copies.

John Michael-Evidently, I got DPP when I bought the Canon. I loaded it, played with it for a while, and came up with the below image after a couple minutes. Being the neophyte I am, I am certain it will handle my needs for now, but Ido believe I will have to get CS3 at some point.

I think it’s important to get stuff right without the post

It seems to me that we all know this to be one of the truest mantras in Photography, and David, thank you for reiterating; I do need to shoot well and not rely on software. Once that is done, the correct exposures that is, how does one decide or determine proper aesthetics? Beauty is in the eye…….? Is there an est. set of guidelines? I would imagine one could say the guidelines differ pending upon the intended audience: mags, art, personal value, etc.

There seems to be a consistent message here for me-light! The funny thing is that not twenty four hours before heading to this lake, I had just read the chapter in Understanding Exposure about light, and he said the same thing as you guys: Avoid mid-day light. But mornings are for sleeping and evenings are for drinking…may have to alter some things.

Chad & Zach, are the suggestions you’ve made about the post based on CS3 tools? If so, I will have to wait on them as I am still working in Aperture at home.

Initially, I was trying to rid the image of the underexposure. Then I found the saturation slider, moved it way down. After that, I moved the highlight and shadow sliders, which i think is how I “Deified” the subject.
