MemberI currently have a Canon 10D, and have been thinking about upgrading whenever I can get the money. I won’t be spending over $1500 on a camera body. I have been looking at the Canon 5D and also the Canon 40D, and honestly, even if it weren’t the price of the 5D that knocks it out of the running for me, I think I am more sold on the 40D.
The 40D seems to have lots of nice bells and whistles, but I am thinking primarily in terms of improvements in image quality…. It sounds like there has been a big leap since the 10D as far as reduction of image noise at higher ISO’s. Currently this is frustrating for me, because it seems like noise really degrades the image quality above ISO 400 on my 10D. I feel like this is a real handicap. I read a review about the 40D on DP Review, and it said something to the effect that image quality is excelent and the same at all ISO’s up to 1600. If this is the case, I think it would be a no brainer to upgrade to the 40D when I can get the money for it. Is this the case? Any other thoughts/experiences concerning the 40D? Is there a noticable increase in image quality at higher ISO’s that would make it worth the extra money?

MemberJohn,
You may want to wait a bit-I recall a thread here a month or so ago where those more knowledgeable about the industry were discussing the possibility of a new full frame Canon body, based, I believe, on the rebates Canon was dishing out for the XSi and 40D.Just my .02, but if full-frame is something you want, you may sit back and watch.

MemberYeah, honestly, I will probably have the time to wait if they are coming out with a new full frame soon (cause I don’t see myself coming up with the spare $1000 anytime soon).

MemberJohn,
Good questions, ones I would like to know the answer to as well, but I think we need to see what others have to say: Labrati, DA, John B., Zach, and a few others I cannot currently recall, mon mauvais!

David AndersonMemberJohn,
The 10D is a very old model in digital terms and while it’s not a bad camera, it has been left behind by the newer ones.
The 40D will be much better at high ISO, also color depth and dynamic range will lunch the 10D.
Auto focus will be better and faster as well..Asd I said on another thread, Photokina, the king of all photo trade shows is on soon (can’t remember when – sept ?) and lots of new stuff comes out for it..
Canon will have a replacement for the 5D amongst other stuff.
I don’t know if the 40 is getting replaced, I think it’s a bit new for that, but there might be an upgrade or something.
dpreview.com is a great website to keep up with this stuff..

David AndersonMemberSorry, forgot about the lens question.
The 35 f2, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 , 100 f2 and 100 Macro are all excellent non L lenses..
There will no doubt be some new lenses announced as well..

MemberThanks for the info David. It sounds like an upgraded body will be well worth the money.

John BennettMemberId look hard at the 40D.
The 5D is fantastic but pricey. A successor is strongly rumored to be coming which will drive the price down but still, it wont go lower than the 40D. The 40D itself probably wont be replaced for another 8 to 12 months, having just been released last Sept.If money werent an issue…meaning if they both cost the same, then the style of photography that most interested me, wuold determine it.
Action or telephoto (due to 1.6 crop): the 40D
Stills, portraits and similiar: The 5D.Take your 10D and 2 cards to your neast dealer.
Take some shots at ISO 800 and 1,000 on both.
Take some shots of something moving fast to test intial acquisition speed (subjective) and ai servo..Im sure after doing that you’ll be sold on the 40D.

MemberI have the 40d …great camera ..I always wanted a full frame so I have purchased non “s” lenses ….and have been waiting for the 5d upgrade …I think for 18months or so now …For $1200 AU odd it is a good buy at the moment and not to be sold short.
I guess the best way to evaluate a Camera is to list my dislikes …Hmm …Its not full frame ……hmmm not 21 mpxl
