MemberAnybody around here tie your own warm-water leaders? I am heading to a small OK river this weekend with avg. size LMB and SMB, some sunnies, and if I am lucky, some carp. I have the fluro. in bulk spools, plus I am getting real tired of paying for the store-bought. I just need to know how long each section needs to be.
Thanks Guys,
Dusty

Mark SchaferMemberDusty,
This site is pretty good http://www.jdunns.com/personal/java_leader_calc.html and there are a lot of others you can find with a quick google. I don’t fish with fluro unless the water is really clear and the fish are spooky. You can spend a lot of time on a leader, I get by a lot of times with 8# and a tippet section of 6# Maxima ultra green.

Memberhell I just use 8lbs striaght Maxima….
I dont even worry about the “added” tippet unless I nymph fish with a scud…
but Id rather throw big sculpin and streamer at high noon with 8lb line.. then watch a float all day with 7x tippet

MemberI’ve really learned to keep it simple for bass and such.

MemberDusty,
If you can find a fall 2007 issue of American Angler, I wrote an article on how to make your own furled leaders with standard mono and WITHOUT using any jigs or tools, other than your own two hands.

MemberI furl most of the leaders I use for saltwater fishing.

Mark SchaferMemberI don’t approve of selling them, but some do.
BBDid anyone ask for approval?

MemberMark,
What I approve of has nothing to do with you.

MemberMark, your point is well taken.

MemberThe ones I make don’t require a jig or any tools other than your fingers, and a couch or chair to keep the ends apart as you furl the mono.

MemberI look forward to your instructions, Craig.

MemberOut of interest is anyone tying furled leaders with braid for weight range 6 through 8# and used for swffing?
Jul 7, 2008 at 3:37 am #27062craig phillips
MemberJason,
I don’t tie with braid, but we generally recommend starting with your rod weight for the mono you use for leader building.

MemberCheers Craig,
I will see if I can find Ande over here and knock some up and see how they go on my trip south next week, will also make up a 6# thread based leader and see how they compare.
My freshwater furled leaders are made using Gudebrod thread, mostly mixed colours for a camo effect which are then soaked in Dow Coring’s MH1107 and allowed to dry completely for fishing drys and Xink for nymphs and lures.
BTW is the leader you’re making the Singaporean as shown on this link?

MemberThat’s the same concept, but we use a different technique to reach the same end product.

MemberI’m feeling confused.

MemberBB – Our technique produces a 4 strand butt section and a 2 strand mid section, to which we attach a tippet.

MemberThis thread took a turn for the furled, and I will try these based on all of y’alls obvious affection for them, but I guess I was not specific enough in my original request: does anyone have any specs on tying mono to mono or fluoro to fluoro simply using blood knots? You know…18 inches of 30lb., 18 inches of 20lb., etc.
