Dusty before I started using furled leaders I use to use the following recipe for trout leaders, the great thing with making your own is the infinite variations and options you have in making the perfect leader for the given situation. The water knot is far simpler than tying blood knots but I’m not sure how good it is for joining fluro as I didn’t use it as a leader material.

Spool of cheap 22lbs BS monofilament like Bayer Perlon
    Spool of 15lbs Maxima monofilament
Spool of 8lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer
Spool of 5lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer
Spool of 3lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer

Tie one to two yards of the 22lbs monofilament to the fly line using the needle knot. This is the sacrificial butt of the leader.

Tie to the butt another one or two yards of the 15lbs Maxima using a four turn water knot.

Tie to this another one or two yards of 8lbs or 5lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer using another four turn water knot. This is the tippet.

If you need to make a finer tippet, use one yard of the 8lbs Super Shinobi and then tie a tippet of whatever length you want of 3lbs Super Shinobi to the 8lbs using another four turn water knot.

    Dusty,
These 2 sites cover most of my formula needs, after you do some reading on the subject and understand the basic proportions you’ll be able to work up you own formulas for the particular applications. Blood knots are nice if you have the time, but I use a double surgeons knot most often

Thanks guys, I will try these out.

    Jason,
I am unfamiliar with a water knot. Does it go by any other name you know of?

You should also look at LeaderCalc over at Global Fly Fisher.  It has a ton of formulas in it.
