Cabin Fever-I hear ya! I am not hampered by fishing seasons, and I truly feel for those of you whom are. Texas is certainly not known for its trout, and if I want to chase them it is at least a three-hour drive, regardless of where I go. So now, I am just waiting for the water temp to get to that magical number for the LMB and the carp to start foraging the shores. Until then, I’ll be at my vise.

I really like this fly Neal. I sat down last night, tied a dozen or so caddis pupae, then tried the lightning bug nymph only to find that I could not find my pheasant tails-I suspect my dog, and we will be discussing this later. Do you only tie this in 12s, and does the color of the dubbing/synthetic blend matter very much?
Cameron – don’t make me do a special finger picture for you too – it might not be as pleasant 😉

Look in the Sunday paper and wait for a 50% off coupon from Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. Then take said coupon to the store and pick up an OTT light. They come in many configurations to suit many hobbies. Personally, I use the portable one which folds down when not in use. You can also serach Ebay for “Ott lights” and get some good results. I gave $40 for mine on Ebay.

A good resource for you would be the free classes every Wednesday night at the BassPro Shops in Grapevine, 7:00 p.m. They provide the materials and instruction; all you need to bring is your vise and tools. If you cannot make it to Grapevine during the week, try going to BassPro on Saturday morning around 10:00 a.m. I do not know if they still do it, but members from the Dallas Fly club meet there and sit around and tie. They call it the road-kill round-up, and most, if not all, are exceptional tyers.I need to make up for the day I taught you to dove hunt.
If you flyfish as well as you dove hunt you might as well put your new gear on Ebay now. And the only thing I remember learning that day was how to avoid getting peppered by delinquents with firearms.
A Brazos run sounds good to me, or any other number of places we could go around here. Give me a call.

What Chad and I have not shared about the particular piece of water he si fishing is that it is a glorified drainage ditch, maybe an acre and a half. The TPWD drops a couple K worth of stocker trout in there every year. Anyone fishing this place would be better suited fishing for cats.
Now, this is all assuming he is fishing Plum Lake, and I do not know why they call it a lake. The only other place I know of in W.F. that they drop trout is a small pond on Southwestern BLVD., which I believe is reserved for children. But knowing Chad, I would not exclude him from those whom poach a kiddy pond ;D

First off, put down the beer. I know you are not talented enough to cast and drink at the same time. Second, leave Plum lake alone (I assume that is where you are going, off of Missle Road?) Leave that nasty water hole to the Power Baiters. I know it is local and fast, but take the time and go to the Brazos River below Possum Kingdom Dam, off of HWY 16. Trout will still be there for a few months, until the water warms too much or the Stripers eat them all.We will get together and I will show you all the locales worth hitting.

I’d consider picking up a small on camera style strobe.

Please forgive the ignorance, but would the 430 EX or 580 EX flashes serve the same purpose? Is there a true difference between a strobe and a flash? I think the 430 runs about $280 or so; are strobes a cheaper way to go, or do strobes simply offer better indoor lighting?

First let me start by expressing my condolences for such a recent run of bad luck. Here’s to hoping it turns better very soon.As for the info. you are providing-wow! I certainly have some studying ahead of me. This advice is solid, and much appreciated. Last night I tried taking some practice shots of my black dog, but it was not working out. I realize now you are right about owning ever piece of info in the manual.
I need to re-read this thread, a few times likely, and do some research, at which time I will try some shots, and we’ll see what comes out!

DustyBelieve it or not, that was actually one manual I read cover to cover. I did not recall anything about Kelvin, nor do I recall seeing it in Understanding Exposure. I am currently working on Scott Kelby’s two volume Digital Photography, but I have not run into Kelvin yet. I understand the principle, but I still do not fully understand how it applies to photography. Now I am regretting getting the XSi. For what I paid, I could have got the 40D, paid a little more and got the 50D. Oh well, live and learn. Maybe I should just say to hell with it and go get a 5D.
