Not to be a complete dumb-ass, but does my XSi have a function where I can change the Kelvin, or is a meter needed, or am I completely missing something?

The light is not direct. This sliding glass door face WSW, and by the time the good soft light comes down, the sun has peeked behind a three story building, though there is still light for some time afterwards.I am going to get some boards, read up on the Kelvin temps that keep getting mentioned, and take some practice shots using all of y’alls advice. I am sure some of Scott Kelby’s ideas will be thrown in for effect as well. It will likely be this weekend, but when I get the images I will post them.

Also of importance, what type of environment do you plan on shooting your photographs in, one must consider the Kelvin of competing ambient?

I am almost sure all shots will be taken inside my place, which actually has very poor lighting. I do not think Mama Bear will let me take her new born down by the lake :'( With this in mind, I have been planning on shooting next to a sliding glass door which lets in plenty of light, positioning the subject between the sliding glass and the reflector boards. I also plan to place the baby on white sheet or black sheet, take some shots and go from there. This is the first time I have ever tried anything like this, so there will be a lot of experimentation. I have a blooming Amarillas right where I plan to place the baby, so I will be able to take many test shots to play with the light

You have mentioned Crazy C’s already, but I also use Clousers tied with Kiptail in Olive, Chart., and Gray over white with only one or two strands of flash between the two colors. I tie them on short-shanked, wide-gaped Gamakatsu hooks, SC-15s I think. I have also had some success with olive and white Slumpbusters

Thanks for the info. Lee. I will check out the link and look up the terms you provided. I am starting to feel like I am back in college with my research skills resurfacing! Another photog. buddy of mine told me to look into specularity of light…still working on this one, but I think it is beginning to sink in.

Mama bear might not like it much, but if you can lay a blanket down in the shade and shoot tight with a fast lens you will get nice shots – just keep an eye on the white balance to keep the skin-tone nice.
I have played around with the white balance settings while inside under incandescent lights and was not happy with the results. While outside, I should set the white balance to nat. light, or leave it on AWB?

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to get some black and white pieces of thicker posterboard and try some shots before the nephew, 3 months old, get to my house. your how-tos make sense, and I think I can put them together, we shall see!
David-I do not really know the right nomenclature yet, but I love the light in your photos. That has been my biggest nemesis. All of the examples you posted are nat. light, no flashes or anything else creating light?
I was hoping you would jump in on this Chad…I recall your posts from a while back being very helpful. I have that site book-marked now.

D.More then one flash can get tricky, for example they don’t always fire and getting the exposure right can take time.

Thanks for the input. I really did not consider the physical aspects of handling two plus flashes. I spoke with a photog. buddy of mine today, and he warned me about the two flashes having to have perfect line of site w/ each other as well. And you also make a great point about this centering around fishing photography. I guess to pull off what I was referring to I would need to have several small tripods to hold the remote flashes- no thanks! I already hump in too much gear as it is.So, in the field I am looking at the off shoe cord and a hand-held speedlite, while snapping pics of flies at the vise I can use the extra speedlite and set up the Master/slave scenario?

Aren’t European Stags red? Deer cousins, perhaps? I don’t know, just a thought. Either way, that is amazing. Have you said in the past that you were using your 200mm for these?

I would not suggest getting the Ott w/ mag. glass simply for the mag. glass. To be honest, there are far better mag. glasses available, and I never use mine. I really do not think it is positioned in the best possible location to be used in conjunction with the light and your vise.Dusty
Mine is 13W and plenty for my needs.
I was at Michaels a few hours ago and saw one there. I have also seen them at JoAnn Fabric as well, and JoAnn does 40% sales from time to time also.

Thanks Steve. I tried some out last night, only I used chenille to build the body. This was not the best way to go about it as the chenille poked out through the mylar tinsel I was using. Your way seems much more efective!

I got an “Ott Light” off of E-bay for $40, which is a good deal seeing as how they run about double at craft stores. The light is portable and has a fold-away magnify glass. Once opened, it rests nicely just above my vice and puts out more than enough light.
And it is also great if you are a photographer. I don’t really understand all he meant, but I have a pro-photographer buddie of mine who uses his to look at his prints once he has finished them. There is something the true or pure light given off by the Ott lights that makes them well suited to ensure you have gotten the right colors in your prints.
