I am in the market for a new light to use with my tying, and maybe it could help me with my pictures.

I got an “Ott Light” off of E-bay for $40, which is a good deal seeing as how they run about double at craft stores. The light is portable and has a fold-away magnify glass. Once opened, it rests nicely just above my vice and puts out more than enough light.

And it is also great if you are a photographer. I don’t really understand all he meant, but I have a pro-photographer buddie of mine who uses his to look at his prints once he has finished them. There is something the true or pure light given off by the Ott lights that makes them well suited to ensure you have gotten the right colors in your prints.

    Ott Light.

That light in my photographs (e.g. the fly tying photography montage) is the porable one like Dusty discusses.  I want a standing Ott light Badly.

Trick is to look at Hobby Lobby!!!  My wife let me know about the “sales” at Hobby Lobby and like every 2-3 weeks the “lights” are on sale for 40% off.  Look on the internet or go to the store and ask them when the lights go on sale.

I thought you guys might say that.

Mine is 13W and plenty for my needs.

I was at Michaels a few hours ago and saw one there. I have also seen them at JoAnn Fabric as well, and JoAnn does 40% sales from time to time also.

I just checked the Ott site and they are selling two for one on their task lamps.

    That is a good deal.

Great leads on the Ott lights.  Thanks to everyone.

I need light for a permanent desk and tying station — I won’t ever need to move the light.  Would folks still prefer the portable light for such applications?  Neal, which standing model do you covet?

Aaron, I covet the big standing Ott light!!!

    Aaron,
I would not suggest getting the Ott w/ mag. glass simply for the mag. glass. To be honest, there are far better mag. glasses available, and I never use mine. I really do not think it is positioned in the best possible location to be used in conjunction with the light and your vise.

I have a McKenzie Vise Light that attaches to the post of my vice for use when I travel, a folding Ott lamp like Neal suggests for tying away from my tying desk, and an Ott Lite brand “Crane Desk/Clamp Lamp” for my tying table.

I use the clamp version, so it is solidly attached and takes up less desk space.

    The Holy Trinity.

Neal, you make fly tying sound like a religious experience.

    🙂

Well, I guess in some ways it is.

    Aaron,

This picture of my tying desk includes a shot of the Ott light.  It is the white one on the lower desk.

Just worked out a deal with a bud to purchase the two for one deal, on the desk lamp with the 13wHD light.

This product looked interesting, too.  http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0063391630029a&navCount=0&podId=0063391&parentId=cat604039&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=122608midwinter-perf&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat604039&hasJS=true

I can’t tell if it is a re-branded (or un-branded) Ott.  Any thoughts?  It gets several very good comments from the site, but one comment indicates that it is not as bright as the user would prefer.

I ended up at Michael’s today (Feb. 1), and our local store was in fact strict on the coupon policy.  They would not share a 40% off coupon from the paper so Christine will go back next week to pick up an Ott light at 50% off with the coupon that comes with your receipt.

From what I can tell, the 50% off ticket, good for a purchase during the week starting 7 days out, that Michael’s gives on the bottom of the sales receipt is the best deal out there.
