The other topic on white bass got me wondering…what are some good white bass fly patterns?

If the water levels are right my favorite place to fish the bass run was on the Perdenales @ Riemers Ranch… not sure if you can still access there or not.

    Thanks for the tips Phil.

You have mentioned Crazy C’s already, but I also use Clousers tied with Kiptail in Olive, Chart., and Gray over white with only one or two strands of flash between the two colors. I tie them on short-shanked, wide-gaped Gamakatsu hooks, SC-15s I think. I have also had some success with olive and white Slumpbusters

    Good luck!

Unfortunately, I don’t have a boat, so I have to

Small Cypert mylar minnows in chartreuse or white, Clousers, Naked Ladies (Clousers tied only with sparse flash, no bucktail), Cat’s Whiskers, Borski deerhair sliders, Foxee Clousers, all tied in baitfish colors with small tails, since white bass are notorious short strikers.

This was my goto White Bass and Spotted Bass fly in the rivers and reservoirs in Central Alabama.  Easy to tie, very durable, easy to cast, fished on density compensated sinking line, this clouser pattern worked all the time.  #6 Stinger hook, pearl krystal flash, silver/gold flashabou (or gold flake rubber), over chartruese krystal flash

Cypert minnows always seem to do the trick for me.  Any of the usual colors work, you just have to find them first, and when you do stay put and keep fishing.  Also, make sure you are using the right line and getting down deep enough for them.  White bass fishing is fun, but it sure does get crowded when the runs are going.  Going during the week is key if you can swing it.

Thanks for all the responses everyone.

Does anyone fish for yellow bass?

Yellow bass or yellow perch?  I’ve caught yellow perch in Tennessee at the Melton Hill Steam Plant – evidently one of them was quite a big one, as it was over a foot long.  They are supposed to be good to eat, though generally speaking I wouldn’t eat anything out of an east Tennessee stream.

Perch are definitely delicious.  I used to catch tons of them up on a small lake in the adirondaks as a kid.  I think they’re closely related to walleye.

I prefer something yellow for both white bass and wipers when I’m river fishing for them.
