I think the tilts are very easy to use and work well without a tripod as most of the time I’m at or under 5.6
The shots above are fully tilted, in either vertical or landscape format, it’s tilt lenses at the extreme, they can also be used with less movment for less dramatic effects.
Both the lenses are light and not a drag to carry around and can be used without the movements for good normal shots, in fact the 90 is a very good macro lens.
(it’s designed for product shots after all)They can also be used like you say Zach to mimick 5×4 camera movemnets for increased depth of field, though it’s not esy on a 35mm because you can’t check the depth of field as exactly as you can on the big cameras – it’s a bit of a guessing game.
One big problem I have with them is focus ( both are manual only ) because the 1ds’s don’t have great focus screeens for manual lenses and it’s hard to see exactly where it’s in with such a narrow band.

Might be time to become a Canon man.. 😉 😀The only problem with tilts (IMHO) is they don’t work well for shots published small..

Awesome..We have some Australian Bass water here that looks a bit like that, flowing & clear but not cold enough for trout.
The fishing can be great with foam flys in summer, the bass really hammer them..December can’t come fast enough..

So……
Speaking of football….You guys may have noticed the Rugby (the game they play in heaven) World cup is about to start..
Australia is looking good – we always rise for a world cup.
The mighty New Zealand All Blacks are favorites, though they tend to choke at these things ;)..
South Africa is looking in form.
France will be playing at home so will cheat without a care the world and therefore be a danger.
England (last WC winners) don’t look to be in top form, but it’s early days.
Wales & Ireland both looking good.
Japan will not win, but will play with huge ticker and be applauded by all..I can’t wait.

Lovely shots, I too love the black & whites, they give the shot a classy air..
Hate to be nostalgic, but they bring back memories.
I did a few trips from Illinois to Wyoming as a kid with my father & his merry band of geology students, one of the other proffesors taught me to trout fish in the Wind river area – a nice place to learn.
Please post some Bluegill shots of you have some so I can re-live more of my youth.. 😉 🙂

I always assume the people who strive to shoot good fishing stuff have the ‘eye’ and are willing to go the extra mile to get the best shot.
Let’s face it, if you don’t try hard no matter what camera you have you’re going nowhere.
I also agree that a lot of what’s in the mags is a bit lacking in new angles, a lot of it looks the same.
But my feeling on having the best gear is that it’s worth every extra penny it costs over the cheaper stuff if it gives you even a small advantage on the other guys shooting and gives you an advantage in shooting and selling your shots.There’s nothing wrong with the Nkon D200 or the Canon 20D or whatever, but gone are the days where you can keep a camera for 20 years and still be in the game.

IMHO even used small higher bit & Megapixel shots look better in print and when you start cropping them and running double page spreads the difference is huge.
The thing with my regular work is we never really know how they’re going to be used.
One minute it’s under 6 inches as a CD cover the next it’s been cropped to 50% and run as a full sheet poster.While it’s true that fishing mags aren’t as demanding as others it’s still an advantage in the VERY competitive world of photography to be submitting bigger and better shots than the other snappers be you pro or weekend warrior.
Any thing in the camera or your lens line-up that up’s that advantage is well worth the money IMO.
With Nikon I think they have a big hit on their hands with the D200 in value for money terms and it’s a huge success in it’s market segment, but I bet a lot of their pro’s are again scratching their heads and wondering how much longer they can stick with them in the face of such mighty opposition from Canon.

Isn’t that the resolution of the new G9 point & shoot ???
Where’s the beef.. ::)I used a couple 1DS’s for two years before the current model and at times getting good crops for magazine work out of 11mp was hard.
At times it can even be a problem on a well shot frame at 17mp.
While the Nikon chip will no doubt be an advance on that old thing the resolution is still a bit light on for the price IMHO.By november they’re competing with almost twice the resolution from the 1DSIII and no doubt the new 5D (or 6D ? ) will be around 16 or 17.
I think they need to try harder…
I switched to Canon ten years ago because they were moving the game forward with lcd screens & dials on their cameras to make them faster & more efficient to use while Nikon were telling us that the head needed to come off F4’s (even though it caused endless breakdowns & problems with moisture) because some of the old pros like them and who needs change right ?
Same thing with their week pissy little lens mounts – they had the opportinity to fix it back then before

Looks like a nice little camera, the specs you guys mention above aqre all good, but I see the best advance over the 30D and 20D being the 14 bit color.
That should give really good color on high contrast situations like fish and tackle and as well should give better highlights.Stuff I’ve seen from the 1DIII really pops and the noise at high ISO is the lowest of any camera on the market – some of that on the 40D would make it a great camera for the money.

It’s nie to be thinking about new rain jacket afte a few dry few summers in Australia, even the alpine creeks were looking thin by the end of last season.
So far this winter/spring there’s been a lot of rain and good snow in the mountains so fingers crossed we might have a season with good water levels.www.dsaphoto.com

That’s all real good advice above.
The only thing I could add is lens calibration.
I’ve had a few (Canon) lenses from new that were not calibrated properly and were soft most of the time wider open.
(bigger apatures- smaller numbers )I think it’s a common problem.
Now when I get a new lens or have a problem with an old one I check the accuracy of the focus with a large steel ruler.
With the camera on a tri-pod it’s pointed at the ruler on a 45 deg angle and focused on a number & line.
You need the lens at it’s minimum focusing distance.
If you take 6 or so frames fucused on 10 and 9 or 11 are sharp you might have a problem.
A lens that’s half an inch out close up will be very soft on larger subjects further out.Canon have been very good about fixing the lenses and generaly after they do they work very well.
