Cameron MortensonMemberI’ve been thinking about this for some time and Zach’s last podcast touched on it as well.

Simon ChuMemberI know what you mean about being treated as a tourist ! :'(
Especially as I always look like one!I think boards and outfitters who have guys on the ground are the most reliable sources of true information and what is exchanged off board and through email is often gold.
I will certainly stick up how I get on in a month or so Cameron as I’m on the Kenai bit, fishing with friends.I hate to say it, but down here we are not known for our tipping and that is one of my little bugbears. sure tip if you have a great time and want to give your host an extra appreciation but I found following in the footsteps of perhaps big tippers in the islands, ruined some of my experience. I felt the locals had become accustomed to quite large tips and perhaps financial members of the flyangling community. We had saved every dime to be there (As we all do) :-[ and tried giving flies and clothing but realised only the dollar would suffice. The gross expectation was something I couldn’t appreciate.
I find it hard to pay an extra 10-15% for everything when its quite a challenge to get there in the first place.Aug 22, 2007 at 11:58 pm #18967patrick mccormick

David AndersonMemberI hate to say this, but……
Americans are very demanding tourists – they want an experience that’s somtimes way above what can be provided in the wild..
(Some Australians are like this towww.dsaphoto.com
A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

MemberYou know what I hate? I can’t get a decent fishing trip if I bring my wife along. >:(
On our vacations, I used to go on guided float trips whenever I could. My wife’s not a hardcore angler – she likes to fish a little, but really she just likes to get out to the outdoors and relax. So she likes to just sit in the boat, read a book, and ride along in the drift boat or raft while I fly fish. I used to think that by doing a float trip instead of a wade trip, she could come along and we could spend the time together while I fished, instead of me leaving her behind at the hotel for the day.

MemberMy Buddy and I fished the Tay about 6 years ago. We stayed at a B&B calledThe PEnd in Dunkeld. Marvelous, fod and trearment. Then we went to fish. The ghillie was dressed in tweed, shirt and tie, the whole nine yards. When he saw that we cuold fish and could take a nip his attitude changed and he turned into a real ghillie and the fun began. The basis for his initial attiude I believe, was that he guided for a US Senator and his group. They couldn’t fish worth a darn and all they really wanted was to hear stories and have a ghillie that looked the part. We won out and had a great time. We went to the House of Bruar to buy some gifts and clothes. Granted we did look like Pete the Tramp and their attitude was less than cordial, but that changed when the Amex cards came out. Amazing, but a great time was had by all. Frank

Joel ThompsonMemberCameron,
If you are planning a trip to Alaska I have a very good friend in Anchorage that I swear knows everything and everybody in the entire state. He is a great guy and he would go out of his way to make sure that you were taken care of just because you are a friend of mine. His name is Rich Owens and he grew up here in Deer Lodge. Send me an email of what you are looking to do and I will hook the two of you up! You won’t be disappointed!

Cameron MortensonMemberThanks Joel…I will definately keep you and Patrick in mind on this trip plan.
I had written a LONG response early this morning during a thunder/lightning storm…and it never made it onto the board.

MemberCameron,
I guided up in AK last summer with Ian Crabtree at Unalakleet River Lodge, and after I finished around September 10th, I headed down south to actually do a little fishing of my own.

MemberJust one recommendation

rainbow 32×27
Stacy Corbin and Fred Telleen. http://www.mysticfishing.com
Two great mates who keep sending me pics like this
I fished with them too long ago, they do a lot of wilderness floats through the limited access Kenai Canyon. If you can go Sept-Oct less people, fish are concentrated and better shot at monster ‘bows.
I’d add more but everyone has covered it really well here
Have a great time.
Cheers

Cameron MortensonMemberPatrick…you are spot on about your thoughts on cruise ships.

Memberif you want easy big stupid rainbows plus salmon I’d reccomend mid august, if you don’t really care about catching fish I’d reccomend september, unless you wanna wonder around a steelhead stream for a while or try to cautch bows that are so fat they won’t move more than an inch… If I were planning a trip to AK and I wanted the best fishing possible on a family trip I would come august 15-august 25 that timing allows you to base in Anchorage and have world class fishing.

MemberYour instructions will be, “Do not cast. Do not touch your rig. Sit and wait.”
EXACTLY!!! They must teach this instruction at those “Guide Schools” – half the float guides in Colorado seem to think these instructions must be given in an official speech on the put-in ramp before every float.

Cameron MortensonMemberI started this thread on a bit of a rant about the uncertainties of fly fishing travel and guide services but the thread quickly changed to an Alaska trip planning guide.
