Beautiful shots. I’m shopping for a my first good tele lens and have been advised that the 70-200 IS F/2.8 is a great lens. I would want/need to use a 1.4x or 2x converter for wildlife like deer and bear
Hi John, there’s a new model 70-200 2.8 IS L lens coming (or now out) from Canon that may be worth a look, but the previous model was left wanting a bit on the new high rez bodies in terms of sharpness.
I sold mine recently, but still use a 70-200 F4 IS L because it’s sharper.
That said, the 2.8 is faster and can crack focus very quickly even in very low light.
Both are ok with a 1.4 converter, but will suffer with the 2x – though sometimes A shot is better than nothing.Most of Canons recent lens updates have been much sharper than the model they replace in my experience.

Jaun, the 5D is a great camera with good color and great high ISO performance.
The resolution is more than enough for most people and even in auto everything it will give you great pictures.If the price is that good, think of it as a really big pocket camera and go for it.. 😉

I got to say I am amazed to hear about all the MAC issues. All the graphic designers I know use MACS and love them. They never mention anything about having any issues.
Graphics may put less load on them than photography, video or other applications ?
I think one of the motherboard problems came about from doing huge transfers (50+ Gigs) via firewire – the heat was incredible in the previous Powerbooks.
The new 17′ I have seems to run a lot cooler while doing big processing jobs so maybe the problems have been addressed by Apple.Time will tell.

That’s very interesting Brett – I’ve not seen many direct comparisons of PC vs. Mac.
The problem with a failure has never been about warranty or Apple’s service – in fact they’re pretty good in my experience, but every failure or problem creates so much angst in our business that it really doesn’t matter – I suppose that would be the same with a PC failure.
For example, I had a 17′ powerbook that popped motherboards one after the other and everytime Apple replaced the board no questions, but I had to pay for the data recovery and of course live without the machine for a few days.
To their credit, Apple gave me a new 17′ after the third board.www.dsaphoto.com

On the subject or reliability –
We normally have around 5 or 6 Macs at any one time and have been using them for years.
I’ve found them to be VERY unreliable and fear the worst on a daily basis once they reach an age greater than about 12 months.
At the moment I have a lap-top and two Imacs on the blink.
With laptops, the chargers & mother boards are rubbish and with the Imacs it’s hard drives.
Obviously, we hammer them with hugh photo jobs, but in general, I would say Apple suck in terms of quality.My new work policy is to rent computers for 2 years and them throw them away before they cause any serious trouble.
I doubt my iphone will see 6 months before I apply all 220 of my hard earned pounds to it.. ;D

All I would say by way of advice is that I find the blacks a little dense on my screen and the blue a little over saturated.

To add to what Buzz has said –
Modern DSLR’s have pretty well sealed electronics and lenses are also better than they used to be, but you still need to be careful with moisture coming in through the front of the lens and a UV filter (or pola) will help.
Also, if you’re out on boats or the flats day after day, don’t leave your camera sealed in a case or bag at night and when you get home – let it air out a bit.www.dsaphoto.com

the Lowepro dryzone gets good reviews,
On both the Lowpro Dryzone packs I’ve had the zippers would separate under any pressure.
My camera gear is heavy, so maybe I was overloading ?I wouldn’t recommend them just the same.

I think your shower test is enough to convince me my cameras would stay dry in the rain with the pack.
