Please Lando, just to give these guys an idea of what they are missing, do one of “syncronized fly fishing.” Lando and I have perfected it. This technique also deserves a write-up in all of the major magazines. Mark my words, some day it will be an Olympic sport.

Lando, please tell me that he included a chapter on “synchronized fly fishing.”

I would say the kid that catches a 23+ inch trout has a lot to look forward to. I have caught a 29 inch trout and still look forward to catching a 23 inch trout, or even a day filled with small ones.

One of the funniest experiences I have ever had was watching two people try to net a large fish in a small net. They had many opportuinties to just grab the fish, but insisted on putting it in the net. After about five minutes of trying the fish finally broke off and hopefully was able to swim away. Would have been much better for the fish if they would have just tailed the fish, revived it and let it go. About ten minutes latter I landed and released a similar sized fish and released it all in about a minute. Then one of the guys had to come down and tell me how easy I made it look, and if I had any pointers. I had to tell them not to force the net just land the fish and let it go.

I have found time and time again that when I try something different that what the “reports” say to do that I am successful. Locals get stuck in there ways. After all it worked last week so why not use the same thing this week. Trying something different, and out to the norm., will often produce fish. The fish haven’t seen it over, and over, and over again and will be more responsive IMHO.

I have to agree with Eric on this one, these threads have made me laugh. Must admit that many people on the drink have probably laughed at me as well. With my wading boots duct taped together, not to mention my hat and jacket not matching. This time of year I wear whatever will keep me warm. In the summer I wear whatever will keep me cool. Typically, shorts (with extremely white legs) sandals and a T-shirt. Who cares what I look like, I just want to catch fish. This is mostly dictated by what I can afford. I like to get Orvis stuff after it has been discontinued for a new model, because I can get it very cheap. If it works good for me then I consider it a good product, if it isn’t functional I get rid of it regaurdless of the brand name. Unfortunately, I don’t think this attitude will get me many chicks, but I am married so I guess it doesn’t matter.

    Lando,

By far one of my most memorable trips as well, and it was nice to meet Wilford Brimley and Waldo.

Joel… Lando and purist can’t be used in the same sentence. You ought to see how far he can throw a Rapala. Or how he uses his face for a drying patch for a Panther-Martin. BTW that metal head sculpin can be amazingly effective.

Lando, is that one of your students?

Spencer… Thanks for the offer, but take my advice and keep them as a backup pair. Then you won’t get stranded like I am.

Lando… You know I will if I have to. On second thought, frostbitten toes could put me out of the game for even longer so maybe I will have to wait.

in reply to: Bozeman this week, any suggestions? #20408

    Dave,

I think your theory is a pretty good one. I was also wondering if when they hooked the smaller fish (making them swim erratic) it caught the attention of the bigger fish, and put them in predator mode.
Don’t really know all I know is that it was working well.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out with a few spots this weekend, either with posts or the few PM’s I got.

I did pretty well. The upper sections of the Gallatin in the canyon towards Big Sky were pretty off color, and I couldn’t manage a fish there. However, on the Gallating after it ran through the valley a ways had cleared considerably and fished very well with streamers. Especially well when I was fishing behind bobber fishermen, for some reason.

Fished the lower Madison on the way home and did very good as well with streamers. I caught 2 fish that went 20″ and more that got close to that. As to this comment….

Hopper fishing I would say is done

I had to try it out, and I fished a hopper for about 20 minutes and caught two fish, one was about 16 inches. I think a lot of you would be surprized how often a trout will eat a hopper. It is a big food source that is hard for them to turn down. Never even seen a live hopper in the area, but believe me the fish will remember them.

in reply to: General purpose, go-to trout rods #20517

    Abe,

I have have a Loomis GLX Streamdance HLS in a 5 weight for over a year now, and absolutely love it. It is a fast rod with that suits my casting style well. This is my general purpose rod. If I don’t know exacly how I am going to be fishing when I leave my vehicle it is the rod I pick. For example, right now in Montana I could do anything from nymphing, throwing heavy streamers, or delicate dry fly fishing on a single outing. (I rarely change up that much in a single day, but it is a possibility.) In conditions like that I feel perfectly adequate taking my GLX out for the day. It can handle about anything that I tie onto the end of it. It has a fairly soft tip that will protect tippets, but at the same time has a strong backbone that I have used to control some large fish with.

This is just my recommendation, of a rod that suits me very well. GLX’s will be my first consideration whenever I am looking at a new rod. The only other rod that I have used, and like close to the same amount is an XP.

Lando just posted those last shots so everyone could admire his manicure.

Seriously, how much did you pay? I’m currently trying to convince the wife that we need the same camera.

    Joel,

I can go out any day but wed. after about 3:30. Or saturday, sunday about anytime.

Flint creek down low, or up by P-burg?

in reply to: Gone Fishing-Montana-Day Six #19914

Haven’t decided for sure Joel. Possibly the Clark Fork south of town or where the little blackfoot comes in, or the Big Hole. Have you been to the upper sections of the Blackfoot lately?

in reply to: Gone Fishing-Montana-Day Six #19912

The reason for throwing big streamers for me is simple, the rewards can be amazing. I’m to the point where quality fish are far more rewarding than a large quanity of fish.

It is my personal opinion when a big fish has the choice of eating a 1000 midges or one minnow for the same result they will most likely choose the latter. Of course there are always exceptions.

I’m headed out tomarrow and will be throwing two things: steamers and hoppers. Not many hoppers around, but the fish will remember them and will love the chance at a big meal.
