I am headed to Bozeman on Thurs. and Fri. for an educator’s conference. I will be able to fish both days in the afternoon. Any thoughts on where I should try. I am told the Gallitan near Belgrade is mostly private. Thinking about the Madison near Norris. I mostly want to throw streamers at big fish, and with possibly a hopper mixed in. Not real familiar with the area, as I don’t get over that way much, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Clint,

I would highly recommend you spend $50 and get a reservation on the MZ Ranch for one of your days.

I got a buddy that lives in Bozangeles.

I would make it over to Ennis if you could say anywhere between Varney and Ennis Lake.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out with a few spots this weekend, either with posts or the few PM’s I got.

I did pretty well. The upper sections of the Gallatin in the canyon towards Big Sky were pretty off color, and I couldn’t manage a fish there. However, on the Gallating after it ran through the valley a ways had cleared considerably and fished very well with streamers. Especially well when I was fishing behind bobber fishermen, for some reason.

Fished the lower Madison on the way home and did very good as well with streamers. I caught 2 fish that went 20″ and more that got close to that. As to this comment….

Hopper fishing I would say is done

I had to try it out, and I fished a hopper for about 20 minutes and caught two fish, one was about 16 inches. I think a lot of you would be surprized how often a trout will eat a hopper. It is a big food source that is hard for them to turn down. Never even seen a live hopper in the area, but believe me the fish will remember them.

    Dave,

I think your theory is a pretty good one. I was also wondering if when they hooked the smaller fish (making them swim erratic) it caught the attention of the bigger fish, and put them in predator mode.
Don’t really know all I know is that it was working well.
