Chad SimcoxMemberGreat photos Henry, I really love high contrast black and white photos. You did a great job on the toning as well.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’d buy used. I shoot with a Canon 20D and 30D and have been published using both of them. Don’t worry about the megapixel marketing race. These are 8.2MP cameras and can produce 11×14 prints no problem.
Check and see what KEH has to offer, also look at the reputable dealers (B&H, Adorama) to see what they have used. Also take a look at craigslist, you can get great deals.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’ve got a bunch of foam and hate it. It’s nice if you have foam cut for your gear, but the tear away pieces are wack.

Chad SimcoxMemberBrian did you cut/crop these and then overlay them in printing/post or did you just wind the film partially? I have thought about doing these, but since I don’t have film chems to develop at home, I’d hate to waste so much money of film processing and have it not come out.

Chad SimcoxMemberVery cool. It’s always fun to sit down and draw. I never do it anymore, but I often paint and do drawings within some of my paintings, so I guess that counts.
If you’re going for a realistic representation, be wary of the heavy outlines. Most things in life don’t have a thick black outline around them. Of course it’s difficult to define edges of objects without them.Good job, and keep it up.
Here’s a Hex fly from my sketchbook that I drew in ’06. (I just did a crappy capture using photobooth on my laptop, so it’s not the greatest quality.

Chad SimcoxMemberKendal, I didn’t send out a high res. They ran a 72dpi photo. I had to send preview images for approval to the record label who was working with the mag on this. It was a unique situation where the photos went through the label and passed on to the mag. Surprisingly it looks really good as a half page image.
Zach, I’d rather not say. It’s one of the large contemporary rock mags.
Ben, I’m not too worried about it. Things happen, and there’s not use in getting upset about it. I don’t want to burn any bridges (even if they are just 2x4s held together with duct tape).
I’m not mad at anyone to be honest, I’m going to assume it was a simple mistake (tight deadlines, art dept. accidentally left the preview in from the mock up, or whatever situation). It sucks when it happens but if we’re fortunate enough, magazines will still be around long enough it to happen again.

Chad SimcoxMemberI will say, IS is nice for handholding in low light situations. I’ve used the 70-200 2.8 IS when shooting music performances and it definitely came in handy.
I rarely use the IS on my 24-105 f4. In fact I had to just check the lens to see if that option was on there. It’s been a while since I’ve shot a concert, so that explains why I couldn’t remember…http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberBen, If I carry my camera I usually carry my tripod as well. I’ve got a somewhat heavy set of Bogen sticks with a video head on it (absolutely not ideal!). If I carry my camera I’ll likely have my camera backpack with me, so I just lash the tripod on with the dedicated straps. It’s heavy, cumbersome and uncomfortable. But that’s part of it. I think, if landscape photographers can carry 4×5 and 8×10 view cameras with them into the back country, I’ll get by with my SLR and heavy tripod.
When fishing I’ll just find a spot on the bank to throw my gear and enjoy being on the stream. If the fishing is going slow I’ll pick up the cam and start shooting. As far as sharpness, I try to shoot between f5.6 and f11 on my canon lenses. On my 20D and 30D I do get some shots that aren’t quite there with sharpness other times the shots are amazingly sharp. I haven’t figure it out, but I think I’m being too critical when viewing the photos at 100%. Truth is, they’re likely sharper than I’d get from 35mm.

Chad SimcoxMemberehh… It doesn’t even hit stores until April. I’ve used the current version and loved it, you’ll be happy with the one you’ve got.
Now if only they’d come out with a 2.8 version of the 100-400 w/IS and price it under $2k…

Chad SimcoxMemberMy friend was telling me she was going to take a fly fishing course this spring at one of the schools in Louisville, KY. I’m not sure which school it was, it sounded like it was a continuing education program since she’s not enrolled at any college right now.

Chad SimcoxMemberF8 and be there is the saying of a lot of photojournalist. Basically it’s saying,” you want to get published? Part of it is getting a technically acceptable shot, the other half is just being there.”
Cool interview, it’s interesting to see how people make it to where there at today. Guides spend so much time on the water, it’s natural for them to be the ones shooting and writing. Plus, being published adds to their credibility as a guide.

Chad SimcoxMemberI believe Redrock is has a full support system for the 5D MkII that provides follow focus, matte box, handles, etc. I think that would be useful for serious video use of the camera. Of course that is stuff you’d want to have on a regular video camera when shooting as well. I’m sure you could use a shoulder mount system with these camera’s as well. I’d think that would be a must have, but I prefer shooting with shoulder mount cameras instead of handheld ones.
I’ve seen some amazing work from Still Motion Studios out of Canada. They do weddings with the 5D MkII and a glidecam rig. Using a steady cam system is an art within itself. I’ve tried one recently and was amazed at how horrible I was! To my defense, the HVX camera I had on it was too heavy for the arm I was using and it wouldn’t balance/support the camera, so I’ll chalk it up to equipment issues 😉http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberA DP who shoots some of the projects I edit did another 7D shoot over the weekend and came back said he’s over working with the DSLR/video cameras. I think he did a show for TLC that’s premiering this month that was shot on the 5D MkII, but I could be wrong. I know he said they’re hard to shoot with handheld.
I have another friend that shot a music video recently on his 7D and it didn’t look all that impressive to me… but then again I’ve seen absolute crap footage shot on the RED one camera too. I’ve also seen some amazing footage shot on both. It all comes down to how you use the tools, I will say low light on the 7D looks great. For $1700, you can get a good DSLR with video capabilities, that ain’t bad. Even if you don’t use it for video it’s still a good still camera.
