Thats why I’m thinking a Gimbal mount will do the trick. They are designed primarily as tripod heads for use with long lenses…yet are fully manouverable, so as to track or pan subjects. Properly balanced, once you take your hands off or stop applying pressure, the rig is rock solid.

My thinking being, if a Gimbal can do that with 15 pounds of lens/body and still allow for tack sharp images at slow shutter speeds (as with mirror lock up)…With practise you should be able to pan/swivel freely without shake and tremors disrupting vid recording.

Again, not as good as systems specifically designed for vid but a still photography tool that can (should) be adequate to allow for both.

Corey did you see this on Moldy Chum yesterday?  I think shot with the 5DMII.

Thanks for the great ideas and the conversation! Sounds like I have a lot to research over the next year 🙂 I’ll have to see if there is anywhere to rent this stuff local to try-before-you-buy.

Mark: Thanks. Yeah, I saw Ian’s video yesterday. He does some very cool fly fishing and snowboarding photography also! I have been meaning to send him and email to see if he’d share some ideas about his setup.

    Have you tried Pictureline?

They rent cameras, lenses, you name it. Ask for Ken.

    Great thread Cor!

Thanks Doug .. I didn’t think that Pictureline rented any film/video equipment (off camera audio, steady cam, and glidetrack type dolly), but I will be sure to check with them.

Ohh, for that stuff it’s Redman or MPL:

I use these guys a lot for big production shoots where I need extra gear. They’re primarily cinematic production oriented but offer still stuff like cameras,

I just saw this new post on Vincent Laforet’s blog and I figured folks here would appreciate some of the new toys he’s playing with:

    Thanks Bry!

Matt: Thanks for the link … I [s:skegpvu3]really need to add[/s:skegpvu3] just added the Laforet blog to my rss reader! I think/hope that a whole new market for less expensive equipment, that is specifically for dslr video creation, is developing.
