I know you guys are probably sick of these posts by now, but I had to post some pics of the finished product.
Sorry for all of the pics of my ugly mug…Zach was the acting photographer tonight.
I have been waiting to put the registration stickers on until the exterior paint was finished.
This is what the boat looked like coming out of the shed:

Sometimes Zach looses focus and takes weird pictures….
But ultimately, this is what it looks like:
I am going to the South Carolina Coast next week. Hopefully, she will boat her first redfish. Thanks to all of you who have contributed insight as we undertook a project that was way over our heads. This has been a fun adventure that I am glad to have shared with you guys.

PS: If you haven’t checked out Steve K’s thread “Project Boat V2”, his boat is going to blow ours out of the water. This Gheenoe thing is pretty cool.
That method works Steve. As you can see by the photo, I was able to keep the pattern in the boat relatively similar to the “splatter paint mock-up” that I tried on my arm.
It doesn’t work without the beer though……
Wow. That looks great! You guys are getting into some serious modifications. I can’t wait to see the finished project, it is going to be awesome. You clearly know your way around a workshop…..
Our splatter paint was nothing more than slinging it on like Zach said. The spray webbing approach would probably look more like the original finish, but I didn’t buy a sprayer until after this step was complete. I think either method yields an acceptable finish.
Great reports guys. This is fascinating stuff. The hex hatch is definitely on my list.

I think I used about 1/8th of a quart to spray the trailer. It took next to nothing. I still have plenty to paint the boat rails and do whatever other touch-up I need to.
The boat is still sitting in the shed, but I decided that before I took it out, I would take the opportunity to fix up the trailer. I did not get everything done that I wanted to, but I did manage to get the bunks re-carpeted
And then I painted the trailer black….
I am hoping to mount the bunks tomorrow. After that, I just need to pull the boat out of the shed and put on the decals. I also have to install new trailer lights. The end is near….
Wow Zach. Thanks for posting that 3rd picture. Looks like the paint fumes may have actually gotten to me……..
I will find some way to get back at you for that.
I don’t have the first clue about this type of filter. What is it for and is it a requirement for this type of application?
I am using Interlux Brightside which is the same paint I used on the interior, but the hull will be blue. I did a fair amount of research to determine which paint I should use on the outside and I kept coming back to the Interlux. I also bought it online for about half the cost that you would pay at West Marine.
As far as spraying vs. the roll and tip method, it was just something I wanted to try. Having never used a sprayer before, I thought it would be a good chance to learn something new and at the same time achieve decent results.
Having been recently distracted by the prospect of actually being able to fish from this boat, I decided to bite the bullet and finish the project. It was quite a painful process, but over the weekend, I moved the boat back into the shed to apply the exterior paint.
It did not take long to discover that I had overlooked a few imperfections in the hull. Not a big deal, but I could not bring myself to simply paint over them after all the hard work that we had done to this point. That is when I discovered this product. The tag line says it all. “Handles like Putty, Hardens Like steel, Sands Like Wood”. I love it….
It is pretty easy to apply, but sanding is another story. This stuff is no joke.
After allowing the Marine Tex to cure overnight, I set out to sand the hull. I arrived home from work thinking that this would be no more than a 1 hour project……I was wrong. I sanded for about 2 hours tonight, and finished approximately 1/2 of the hull:
As Zach so wisely pointed out before, a backyard workshop with a steady outpouring of a mysterious white powder could look questionable to the local authorities. Fortunately I escaped question once again tonight. This picture was taken after the dust had settled for a good 10 minutes…
I have a long way to go, but when I do finally get around to painting, I have purchased a tool that should help a little bit….
We will see how this turns out.

Ready for this project to be overWow that is a familiar sight, right down to the stickers on the side. I think our boats might have been twins. Even the trailer looks similar. I’m looking forward to seeing how you decide to customize it. They are great boats.
I don’t mind at all Steve. I am more than happy to offer any meager insights that I may have on this subject. I am sure you will find it pretty easy though. Let me know when you head to West Marine. I am not to far from the one off of Hwy 41. You are more than welcome to stop by and see our project if we can work out the timing. I am actually moving mine back into the shed today to start the exterior paint.
Good luck with the project. We will require regular updates of course. Once you get it done we need to get them out on the water together and put a hurtin on some fish.

What model Gheenoe is it?
One thing I have discovered recently is that boat owners seem to garner a strong sense of pride and self worth based on their ability to launch a boat quickly and efficiently. I am no exception to this. After every successful attempt, Zach, David and I nod approvingly at each other and motor proudly down the river as if we own it.
This has actually only happened once however, because I have also discovered that I posses a real knack for forgetting one critical detail: the plug.
As I was reminded (for the third time) yesterday, one needs to install the plug or one will look stupid. Upon backing the boat off of the trailer I quickly discovered that I was sinking at an incredible rate and made a mad dash for the shore. I then proceeded to bail like a madman while bystanders ridiculed and Zach and David tried to act like they didn’t know me. We then jumped in the boat avoiding eye contact and shaking our heads disapprovingly and motored humbly down the river as if it owned us.
Stupid plug.
